Spookasem exhibition at Salon91

Spoookasem exhibition

‘Spookasem’, an enchanting, salon-style exhibition featuring a remarkable group of all-female South African artists, based both locally and abroad, opens at Salon91 Contemporary Art Collection on 20 January 2010. The exhibition includes a rich collection of painting, sculpture, print and drawing, playfully centered round the quirky theme of ‘spookasem’, Afrikaans for candy floss.

Sugar and spice and all things nice; a whiff of the whimsical; a sense of play, of childhood innocence; of indulgence but also of excess; of sweetness poisoned by gluttony and guilt; of the carnivalesque; of nostalgia, dreams and nightmares; of desire and sinful pleasures; an essence of the ethereal, conjuring up with it mysterious images of fairgrounds, forgotten lands, extinct creatures, imagined monsters, skulls, and friendly ghosts…
