“Hey guys I watched this movie called Magnolia last night, it was like totally awesome, let’s rip it off in that Nedbank ad that we’re still stuck for ideas on” …
“YEAH sweet bru! But the frogs must be fish! Otherwise people will think we just like, totally copied the film!”
Can’t imagine what P.T. Anderson would think of this.
@Andrew: I never said he invented the idea. I was commenting on the style and execution. There are many ways to interpret a theme; this one feels like a copy. Magnolia was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this ad on TV.
I disagree with you there Coda – it might have the same reference but I think it is stylistically different. Doesn’t feel like a copy to me at all.
Plus the “hook” of the ad has nothing to do with Magnolia, unless you count catching fish through an ambulance window being the same as catching them in an umbrella.
people, why are you being such idiots, that ad based on how in life one can benefit out of firstly different and also out of the extraordinary things that happen………………and that occorence depicted in the ad is a true occurrence it has happened in the past recently it has happened in new zealand…….

I’ve heard about this happening with frogs as well. Much less appealing than a snoek.

Douchebag, he read about it in a science journal, he didn’t invent the idea.

Agency: Net#work BBDO. Director: Humanoid’s Terence Neale
i think we need to be careful we dont make this site into a ongoing witch hunt. Ive heard of this happening and ive never seen magnolia.
Point taken. I was a bit harsh. I’m not saying it is a copy, I just think of it as one when I see it.
I don’t really care for this ad. But it’s nicely executed. I also think that it’s being flighted TO DEATH. But maybe I watch too much tv.
I dunno whodunit (sounds like a thriller) but I do know the Voiceover artist. Does that count? LOL.
No doubt one of the big ad agencies; they wouldn’t be serviced by the smaller agencies.
