Hendrik is a self-taught artist currently living in Cape Town. Scribbling his thoughts on anything he could find throughout his childhood, he decided to commit himself to making a living doing just that. At the age of fourteen, he began the long road to developing his skill and mastering his ambitions.
Hendrik is still working at his mission with no end in sight. After some years of travel, study and working various jobs, he began exhibiting in 2007 and has shown his work in and around Cape Town regularly since. In 2009, after his first solo exhibition at Salon 91 Contemporary, he took to the road and showed his work in New Zealand. Later that year he participated in a group exhibition at the Climate Gallery in New York and was subsequently offered representation by them.
Keenly aware of marginalisation and the tendency of artists to be swallowed by prevailing trends, Hendrik has developed his own approach and techniques in his work. This may have denied him a degree of mainstream success but will hopefully serve to keep him in the game for a long time to come.
His skill across a broad spectrum of disciplines from animation, photography and digital work to oil painting, 3D directing and intricate ink drawings make him versatile and difficult to confine into any single category within the field of visual art.
He recently wrapped up preliminary visual development work with screenwriter Gert Basson on a feature film project which will be pitched in Los Angeles soon. Hendrik’s next project entails visual development and album art for MT Void, a side project of TOOL member, Justin Chancellor.
This particular series of images came into life for Australian Design conference Semi-Permanent. The image of the chrome robot running across the sand was selected to be included in the annual event book. The content of the work ranges from self- analysis, meditations on beauty around us and social commentary.
