Friend or Foe is Dominique, James, big ideas, kitsch pop pieces and a LOT of knitting. Think chain scarves, woolen fox stoles (bringing new meaning to faux) and beanies in Smartie colours.
They decided to launch the new label with a knitted range but soon we’ll see hoodie designs too and in time for summer, shirts and shorts.
Dominique, a fine artist by training, let us know the story behind the label, “Being a creative in Cape Town is quite tricky. There is a lot of unmentioned politics happening: who is cool, who knows who. I find it difficult to be accepted as a fine artist, the market is saturated with cutsie kitsch pop design.” And so the age-old phrase applies – if you can’t beat them, join them. Dominique and James decided to sell cutsie kitsch pop designs that prove to be popular but are doing it their own way by selling their wares under a label that comments on the underlying issues within Cape Town’s creative industry. Friend or Foe.
Next for their creative collective – original conceptualized stage costume hoodies for PHFat. Dominique has some experience in this department previously working on the Parowphernalia clothing range for Jack Parow.
