Cape Town based illustrator and animator, Jesca Marisa, launches her 2nd published graphic novel on Saturday. The comic – Awakenings 2 – is the long-awaited sequel to Awakenings 1. The series is both written and illustrated by Jesca.
Awakenings 2 is 112 pages long and in full colour throughout. This fully local production – created and printed right here in Cape Town (with some generous support from the National Arts Council) – is a limited edition print. The 500 printed copies are sure to excite fantasy and manga aficionados everywhere.
She gave us some info about the novel: It contains two stories and a character art section. The first story: “Mothership” tells the tale of a boy who lives on an organic ship, which grows and evolves as he ages. Together they travel across the world. Seeing everything from afar, he’s yet to set foot on real land. The second story: Grave of Ghosts is a fantasy tale in 4 parts. The story follows a cast of ghosts, demons, one scary little girl and two human brothers traveling across a desolate netherworld, trying to reach a city where they hope their salvation lies.
Jesca Marisa’s previous endeavours include her animated short film, Mune, that has traveled to festivals across the world and won the artist the SAFTA (South African Film and Television Award) for Best Animation in 2011. Currently Jesca works full time as an illustrator, but her first love is for comics.
