The community mural project, curated by /A WORD OF ART, and which started in Woodstock, Cape Town earlier this year has reached the people of Soweto.
A selection of 10 artists were given a brief to work together to design and create a mural on an old Mofolo Park building as well as on the wall outside the Thesis concept store. The artists also spent time interacting with the local children from a nursery school opposite Mofolo Park and held an art workshop for them on 2 September.
/A WORD OF ART curator of adidas All Originals I ART SA project, Ricky Lee Gordon says, “We want to promote and celebrate local artists, mural art and the original culture within the communities we interact in.” adidas Originals and Thesis were both very excited to be involved. “ We are honoured to have partnered with /A WORD OF ART once again and believe our brand is the perfect fit to help interact with the community of Soweto by celebrating street art and its positive influence on local culture” Andrew McDade, Senior Category Manager for Originals at adidas SA, said.
The unveiling of the completed wall coincided with a poetry session at the Thesis store, a monthly occurrence already popular with locals. To celebrate the work at both I ART WOODSTOCK and I ART SOWETO an exhibition of books, photographic prints taken of all the murals, and a documentary about the whole project will happen at Main Street Life in the Mabheng Precinct at the end of September. An I ART SA after party will also take place showcasing some of South Africa’s local musicians.
The exhibition and after party dates have not yet been confirmed, follow adidas Originals’ Facebook page and Twitter to stay updated. For further details you can also check out the I ART SA project website.
