140 BBDO very cleverly jumped aboard the Youtube moutain biker sensation with a tactical banner campaign for Capitec Bank. The video, featuring a mountain biker being taken out by a red hartebees, was seeing some serious traffic with over 7 million views at the time (now over 11 million). In response, 140 BBDO placed Capitec banner ads on the video page saying, ‘Get bucks even quicker’, ‘Keep an eye on your bucks’, ‘The buck stops here’ and ‘More bucks, less charges’. Quick-thinking!

yes. because when I type in “guy gets taken out by buck”, what I actually mean is “find me easy credit”.

because using a pun or some colloquial term does not make it relevant to what I’m seeing.
the clip has nothing to do with banking, or money or lending. people looking for the clip are not thinking about lending or money or banking. Tactical implies some kind of cross pollinating of products or themes. so if you were for instance, advertising hard hats it would make sense. this is very forced and not very clever. at best it’s a somewhat amusing pun.

The reason this is clever is that gthe brand has chosen to target a very topical new viedeo.
Because iut is new to YouTube, there is low competition and so the ads are a lot cheaper that they may be on more established videos on YouTube.
Also, its clever and thus reinforces the Capitec brand values of innovation and being on the ball.
Banks are not niche products which have very specific audiences. Everyone who saw this ad works with a bank and for a very low cost, Capitec has produced a clever much talked about ad.
I think its brilliant.
