ELLE Decoration Boardmans SOLVE Winner - Between 10 and 5

ELLE Decoration Boardmans SOLVE Winner

Elle Solve Competition 1

Earlier this month the finalists for the ELLE Decoration Boardmans SOLVE New Talent Search were announced. The competition has been running for ten years and aims to showcase new South African design talent.

The idea behind this year’s competition was to design a stool that was both original and beautiful and that showed ingenuity on the designer’s behalf.

The finalists, Marc Guy Baker, Ruben Roussouw, Roland Richartz and Leanne Bates all received constructive input from leading names in the local design landscape. The judges included Source Design’s Trevyn and Julian McGowan, designers Porky Hefer and Haldane Martin, and Scott Murray of Boardmans and ELLE Decoration Editor Laureen Rossouw.

27-year-old Cape Town interior designer Ruben Roussouw, with his beautifully crafted ‘Protea Stool’, took first place and can now look forward to seeing his design made up as a prototype by Boardmans, with the possibility that it will be put into production.

Roussouw’s stool was inspired by South Africa’s natural beauty with a specific focus on the indigenous protea flower. The judges believed Rossouw’s stool to be on trend because of his use of natural wood and steel. The chair has a jewellery-like quality.
