The Influence Project is a study of influence in all it’s forms through a collection of portraits of South African influencers both big and small.
The project is a collaboration between photographer Andrew McGibbon and Dreamvest, a company that backs artists and start-ups with financial, legal and business support, and is being produced by Martin Downs.
Their aim is not to find the most influential people in South Africa but rather, to discover something of a distillation of the mystery of ‘influence’.
The final product will be a coffee table book including portraits of and Q&As with over 100 South Africans. The images will also be exhibited.
The website www.the-influence-project.com is live and serves as a progress blog and info guide.
The project is making its way around South Africa on a subject finding mission. Next week they’ll be in Joburg and in September they’ll be in Cape Town via the karoo to meet Gary Player on his stud farm, naturally.
Find the Artist Statement on the site, here, to find out more about what they are trying to achieve. Follow the project on Twitter – @in_fluence - where you can tweet them suggestions on who you think they should photograph.
Here are some of the portraits taken so far:
