These are some personal works that Cape Town based illustrator Steven Harzen has been working on over the last few months.
The first three are a series of illustrations. Number one including a quote from Born to Die by Leftover Crack, a band which Steven says has influenced him the most in his odyssey through life, and number 3 being a self-portrait that was started as a sketch 2 years ago and only recently completed. 4, 5 and 6 are experiments in typography and textures and the final two are the most recent. Steven says, “I like mixing up English and Afrikaans, I think it flows very well together on multiple levels. Character number 8 is the uncensored version for a shirt design I did for Pass Out Clothing.”
About his work, Steven says, “I mainly work in Illustrator, I really enjoy it, somehow it nearly borders on excitement. I try to start the whole process with a sketch and then fine tune the entire thing with Illustrator. Most of my illustrations and characters are predominantly black and white for the mere reason that I always shied away from colour, why hasn’t occurred to me yet.
I grew up listening to a broad genre of Punk music which shaped my primary influence in my work and in my ‘message’. I firmly disbelieve in preaching my opinion of things to other people, that’s why I would like to use the term message lightly. Nonetheless I still like poking at taboo subjects and stirring shit up. I guess my images also have a nihilistic subtext, which I think is a mere reflection of my perception of my surroundings. ”
