Young Champions is a photo series by Juan Stockenstroom that features amateur boxers between the ages of 12 and 17 from various parts of Cape Town. Juan says that the aim of the project is to raise awareness around boxing as a positive sport and a portal to success for many South African youth and to spread the message that the discipline, hard work and dedication required for boxing can be carried into various other parts of daily life.
Juan himself is no stranger to hard work and dedication. After completing a few short courses in photography he worked as a lighting assistant for various local photographers, then moved to London in 2004 looking for new challenges. There he discovered an interest in post-production and quickly pursued a career as a photographic retoucher. After a successful six years in London he returned to South Africa where he continues to work in post-production, photography and 3D illustration. He has worked for leading retouching houses and award-winning photographers in London, Europe and here at home.
Young Champions is currently being exhibited at the Castle Of Goodhope as part of the Cape Town Month of Photography. The project has also been recently awarded with 3 Honourable Mentions at the International Photography Awards, which took place in Los Angeles, in August.
