On Saturday we took to the skies on kulula.com’s Most South African Flight Ever. The campaign celebrating South Africaness was a giant collaborative project by King James, Society, Punk, Hammer Live Events, Atmosphere PR and Proof.

 

The thinking behind the campaign was this:

 

Every day kulula zips ordinary South African’s around the skies and one thing we’ve learned is that diversity isn’t about skin colour or where you come from. Being South African means being part of a giant pick and mix bowl of wildly different individuals that don’t fall into the standard clichés or stereotypes (a few trips on a kulula flight will illustrate this). So to celebrate this and the fact that kulula has grown from nothing to what it is today by taking ordinary South Africans all around the country, day in, day out, we have created The Most South African Flight Ever.

 

To pick their passengers, kulula ran a Facebook competition on their page where interesting South Africans could nominate themselves to be part of the flight. Just short of 5000 entries were received, read through and narrowed down to the final selection.

 

The event, which took 2 months to co-ordinate, was a non-stop surprise-fest from start to finish. The departure hall entertainment included power-dressing gumboot dancers, a contortionist, a magician, puppeteers, soccer ball tricksters and a set by Jack Parow.

 

On the flight, from Lanseria to Lanseria, we enjoyed a scenic tour of Joburg skies, with entertainment by MC and comedian, Kurt Schoonraad and a pop-up choir seated throughout the brand new plane singing the national anthem.
