Inspired by the original Holi Festival in India, Colour Festivals have travelled around the world and the 2nd of March 2013 will be the launch of the first in South Africa.
Seed Experiences is bringing the Cape Town HOLI ONE Colour Festival to the Grand Parade where clouds of brightly coloured powder will fill the air at a countdown every hour from 2pm to music by a line-up of SA’s biggest DJs.
Photographer Damien Schumann has travelled through Africa and the Middle East to produce hard-hitting and thought-provoking documentary photography. In 2011 he was recognised as one of Mail & Guardians top 200 Young South Africans, and won an artist residency in Brazil at the Instituto Sacatar. As the official photographer for HOLI ONE, he will be covering the entire event including behind the scenes, and the pre and post production process.
As part of the pre-production, sample powder colours needed to be tested and so Damien teamed up with stylist Amy Rusch and model Bianka Hartenstein to create this series of photographs experimenting with the concept of transformation.
The images are currently being used as inspiration for entries into a contest by Seed Experiences. For the competition, followers of the event’s Facebook page have been called to submit their own visual interpretation of transformation, in exchange for a chance to win tickets and festival-related prizes. The best entries will be posted to their page and voted for. Find more competition details here.
