The Blend in Roeland Street is a coffee shop maverick. They serve five different brands of coffee, their menu is totally flexible, and their counters are made from swimming pool coping. This East City Eatery is a great spot if you want to get some out-of-office work done, have a meeting, or just relax. It’s also perfect for freelancers to work at, since they don’t have that drink-up-and-go attitude at all.
Here they don’t mess around with just one specific roast of coffee. They cater for every kind of fuss, serving Deluxe, Bean There, Kupa, Origin, and (their very own roast) The Blend. The featured coffee changes every week, but if you prefer something else, just ask.
The menu includes salads, sandwiches, muffins and treats, and they are very happy to chop and change it. The Feta, Avo, Rocket and Nut Sandwich is a hit, and it’s rumoured that their Dagwood is the best in town. Also, try the Date Cookie!
David and Julie opened it in 2012, and they designed the interior themselves. The space is small, but not even a little awkward, since it’s so cleverly arranged with plenty of seating. There’s also a business card wall. They found the pool coping (the pretty slabs of concrete that outline pools) at an old house, and thought it was perfect for The Blend’s counters. The rest was crafted with a combination of Julie’s French finesse, and David’s skilful handiwork.
Look out for their new project, The Craft Pizza Company, opening right next door in October. This build-your-own pizza spot will have the same homey-industrial vibe, with the food and ingredients being the main décor. If The Blend is anything to go by, this new place will open with a bang.
