Wolves in Illovo is the self-professed neighbourhood café of ‘Awesome’, and its dedicated regulars will agree. Famous for red velvet cupcakes and hummingbird cake, Howl music Thursdays, comedy and lonely-hearts speed-dating evenings, print exhibitions and a scrabble league, this coffee shop is also the ever-popular daytime office away from the office for many of Joburg’s freelancers.

As ex-ad agency people themselves, Wolves’ owners know what freelancers are after, which is good music, strong coffee, and a simple and affordable menu of eats and infamous sweet treats. With the addition of sister-space next-door, The Good Luck Club, you now also have the option of ordering Asian chow, but at a significantly more pricey check.

At Wolves you’re welcome to settle down for a few hours of work, provided you play by a few basic house rules, which are essentially just common decent behaviour: don’t yell obscenities over the phone or conduct rowdy meetings that’ll disrupt others’ coffee-and-cupcake dates. Simple. If you do choose to settle in for a while, either put the proverbial ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign up in the form of earphones, or enjoy the many interactions you’re bound to have as both people you know and people you might want to know come and go. And if you hang around for long enough, you can flow straight from the day-time coffee crowd into the after-work beer crowd at around 4:30ish, earlier on Fridays.

Wolves is open seven days a week and has fast, reliable WI-FI. There are odds and ends for sale like jewellery, local music and arts publications. The Wolves team, which includes baristas and all-round good guys, Gift Ndlovu and William Teffo, each wear a “We love Wolves” tee, which perfectly sums up the overarching sentiment of the place.
