Motherland is owned by Rob Maud, Kirstin Maud and Seb Schneider. In 2009 Rob and Kirstin travelled the globe, only to realise just how special their motherland really is, so they opened up Motherland with Seb, to celebrate the humble African coffee bean.
Motherland launched in Rosebank (Jozi) in September 2010. The branding was designed by InJozi, to celebrate the African abundance and beauty that inspired the concept, while the interior was done by the Motherland team themselves.
In March 2013 the team took Motherland to the Mother City and opened a shop in St George’s Mall. They also opened a shop in Dunkeld (Jozi) and Braamfontein in 2013. All the stores have a similar look and feel, but the space and location dictate the interior design, so each spot has that ‘local coffee house’ feel to it. The team really just wants people to feel inspired and creative when they come to a Motherland, which makes for a comfortable, relaxing environment to get some out-of-the-office work done over a fresh cup of coffee.
The Original Blend Cappuccino is a deliciously roasted creamy classic, but the Dictator is a must-try! It’s espresso with condensed milk and whipped cream. The Iced D’ivoire is an iced chocolate coffee, and one of the most popular items on the menu. Honestly, you can pick just about anything on the menu here, because their coffee beans are ethically sourced from Ethiopia, Rwanda and Burundi, then expertly roasted and perfectly poured. So be sure to always get a Mother Cuppa- it’s 450ml!
Pair your coffee with one of their freshly baked treats, made in store daily of course. Grab a Blueberry White Choc Muffin or a slice of the Motherland Cheesecake (or both).
