In the hands of Crystal Birch; leftover gold tinsel, wool, shoe laces and wire are imaginatively constructed into quirky and colourful head pieces. The last we saw from her was the ‘Celestia’ range of felt hats, photographed by Kristin-Lee Moolman in a striking lookbook. Her latest is showcased in a dreamy set of images all shot on film by Ricardo Simal whose experimental double exposures we love. As an alternative to the more predicatble flower crowns, Crystal’s ‘Pom Pom’ collection is inspired by year-end festivities, goofy young girls and parties.
In making the headwear, Crytal’s friends are roped in on the nostalgic trip with her – “everyone visiting me in studio is making a pom pom while having a coffee,” she says. With plans to revisit other old-school craft techniques such as tolletjie brei, crochet and embroidery soon, we can’t wait to see what she’ll dream up next.
