Art director and stylist Gabrielle Kannemeyer and photographer Kyle Weeks drew inspiration from Steffany Roup’s painstakingly handcrafted jewellery collection for a series of portraits of local artists and muses. Designer Keith Henning, artist Unathi Mkonto, model Azuli Peeters as well as Steffany’s mother Julia Brewis are a few of the poignant faces featured in the lookbook.
“I wanted to provide the models with a platform to represent themselves – an opportunity to have themselves seen the way they desire. Being that many of the people cast were artists and designers with their own aesthetics I thought it was important…The cast were provided with a rail of clothing and were invited to bring their own looks and a sentimental object which I then helped them with in regards to styling. Because the environment is often intimidating, my services were there for them if they needed to be utilised. Everyone was different – on Keith I added the rich Mnisi jacket, with Githan we did a whole look, he wanted to be immersed in the experience, with Unathi we changed his look up with the Gstar utility vest, Siya picked a blue suit from my rail and then I finished it off with a couple layers. Nothing was styled or added without the permission of the cast,” says Gabrielle about the process.
The set was inspired by Malick Sidibé and transformed to suit the look of each subject making everyone part of the process. This season, Steffany Roup’s collection is bold and sculptural featuring chunky geode pendants and large hoop and drop earrings.
