“Illustration allows me the freedom to draw anything and everything while keeping things groovy and lighthearted,” explains an equally lighthearted Ewald Rist. The 20-year-old student and freelance illustrator has become known for his small yet memorable illustrations which range from iced doughnuts and storm-clouds to lobotomized skulls and otherworldly Siamese cats.
Having been a keen doodler since the age of nine, it was one adolescent night spent sneaking out to a party in Cape Town’s CBD where Ewald first gleaned inspiration from the city’s many gig posters. Process-wise, Ewald likes to let his ideas settle for a while before taking them to paper. From there he maps them out in pencil before retracing their form with ink, and later scanning and vectoring them into digital life.
