Kelly Makropoulos expresses her love for colour and texture through her latest photographic series Emboldening the Self. She believes that when photography has a universal quality, viewers naturally see aspects of themselves reflected through the work – even inanimate objects have the ability to evoke associative feelings.
“My portraits are a mutually-beneficial endeavour between myself and the subjects. In terms of emboldening, I needed to make sure I was uplifting the subjects in the manner that I shot them. As much as I was expressing myself, I feel it’s imperative to have a visible part of the subjects’ character come through in my images. So to find that balance between my own self-expression and my subjects’ self-expression was challenging,” she explains.
