Bittersuite designed this poster campaign for SANCCOB to alert the public to the rapid decline of the African Penguin population, as well as SANCCOB’s on-going efforts to save the species.

They said, “The object of the campaign is to encourage people to have the foresight to see the problem before it becomes critical. The viewer’s visual perception of each execution is called into question with the line “See the reality before it’s too late” and a call-to-action encouraging the viewer to act now and help save the species by adopting a penguin at SANCCOB. The stark visual language used throughout the series echoes the graphic black & white look of the penguin.”

The series of 3 posters was placed in doctors’ rooms, at optometrists, in hospitals, shopping centres and schools and at the SANCCOB Education Centre.

Creative Director: Andrew Hofmeyr
Art Director: Jade Eccles
Graphic Designer: Tessa Kleingeld
Copywriter: Caitlin Cloete
Illustrators: Tessa Kleingeld, Elise Wessels

Poster 1: Don’t be short-sighted

This poster takes the form of a reverse “eye test”. As the eye travels down the chart, and corresponding timeline, the steeply declining number of penguins becomes clear, urging the viewer not to be short-sighted about the imminent demise of the species and to adopt a penguin.

Poster 2: Tipping Point

This Escher-style poster plays on the viewer’s perception of the positive vs. negative space. The fact that it’s challenging to see the transition of the penguins from alive to dead in the middle of the poster represents the fact that often it is difficult to recognise a problem at a critical point when a change can still be made. A call-to-action urges the viewer to help change the picture by adopting a penguin.

Poster 3: Take A Closer Look

This graphic poster contains a hidden headline reading “See the reality before it’s too late” which can only be seen from a distance. This headline captures the viewer’s attention and pulls them in, revealing the ratio of live vs. dead penguins. A call-to-action urges the viewer to take a closer look at the problem and help by adopting a penguin while they can still be saved.

KingJames created this series of moving billboards for Allan Gray that appeared at major intersections in Johannesburg. While the tagline, “You Wait Because It’s Worth It”, remained static, the visuals behind were short clips of footage showing fans waiting to catch a glimpse of The Beatles to a soldier dad returning home. Being silent, the clips used had to speak volumes.

Remember these? This is the radio extension of Lowe Cape Town’s ‘Selfies’ campaign for the Cape Times. They said, “We took the newsmakers at the centre of each story – and had them deliver the report themselves. Recognise the voices?”

FoxP2 and MUTI created these illustrated posters for cinema chain Ster Kinekor. The posters depict famous locations from iconic films as getaway destinations with the pay-off line, “Our big screen takes you there.” The chosen destinations - King Kong’s Skull Island, The Shining’s Overlook Hotel, Avatar’s Pandora and Minas Tirith from Lord of the Rings - all received a classic, mid-century travel poster style treatment for the campaign.

To launch the new Audi A3 Sportback, Ogilvy & Mather Cape Town came up with the Audi A3 Exchange, an opportunity for the public to enter a competition to swop their current car for a new Audi A3.

Entries were made via a microsite. Through voting, the public made the decision whether the final Audi A3 Exchange showdown would take place in Cape Town, Joburg or Durban by tweeting #AudiA3Exchange and #CT, #JHB or #DBN.

Within a few hours of the campaign going live, #AudiA3Exchange was trending on Twitter. These are some of the campaign stats:

• Over the 3 week campaign period, 11 310 people entered to exchange their own car. 82% of which drove direct competitors’ cars.
• Over 50 437 tweets about the campaign were generated.
• The Audi SA Twitter following increased by 68% within the 3 week campaign period.
• The Audi A3 TVC received 56 730 total video views on YouTube.
• R3 116 654 worth of earned media was generated.
• For each week the campaign was live, Audi SA received more than 100 test drives a week.

The top three finalists raced against the clock competing in mental and physical challenges to determine the ultimate winner.
