Hellocomputer and Draftfcb’s second annual Hack-A-Thon took place last week with the theme: Hack For Kids. A total of 6 teams (4 in Joburg and 2 in Cape Town) had just 48-hours to conceptualise and build a working prototype.

The briefing took place on 9 May at 18h00. Teams then battled it out to completion for the judging at 18h00 on Saturday, 11 May. The creations were judged by Danette Breitenbach (Advantage), Fran Luckin (Ogilvy), Brent Singer (Network), Brett Morris (Draftfcb), Theo Ferreira (Aqua) and 6-year old twin boys.

This year’s Hack-A-Thon saw the creation of:

An automated educational pancake-making assistant

Created by Team Thingking (Cape Town), this project helped kids make pancakes easily by running a mixing bowl underneath different stages of ingredients and mixing processes until completion on the frying pan.

A miniature DIY iPhone projector package

Team Last Min (Joburg) created a crafty, quick and easy DIY way to build an iPhone Projector inside a box. Kids could also assemble one themselves if they were willing.

A Wii remote-controlled Oreo catapult

This project was created by team Fear and Loathing in HackVegas (Cape Town). As simple as the name suggests, a mechanical catapult operated by a Wii remote was used to launch and dunk Oreos into a glass of milk.

A live online interactive puppet show

Created by team Boris The Animal Show (Joburg), this interactive puppet show was controlled through audience interaction on a blog that ran live, parallel to the show. The puppets asked the children questions that would sway the story in different directions.

The Grand Prize Winners: Team Ah Yeah’s (Joburg) entirely hacked kid’s bedroom, Daddy I Don’t Wanna Go To Bed.

The winning idea was simple; the door of the room closed a circuit as parents left, turning the entire room into a gaming console. The bed, pillows and even Ben Ten posters were rigged to become the game’s controllers. Sensors allowed kids to jump on the bed while being mirrored by their imaginary friend, pilot a rocket-propelled dinosaur through space as well as play a multiplayer pillow fight and – via a score counter – see who won. If the door was opened at any stage during play the circuit was broken and the game was hidden from any meddling parents’ eyes.

The Kids’ Choice Award Winners: Team A Tribe Called Quest’s (Joburg) Scaletrix race, powered by eating your veggies.

This project incentivised children to eat their veggies; the faster the players of the game ate, the faster their car moved on the track. For each lap completed either player was automatically rewarded with a gumball.

Pretty awesome stuff, we can’t wait to see what’s produced at the next one. Congrats to the winners!

The 2nd annual 48-hour Hellocomputer Hack-a-thon took place last week Friday and Saturday. Teams were invited to create something new and innovative from concept to working machine in just two days. This year’s brief was to design something for kids.

This is Thingking’s entry, their idea was to build something that would help kids make pancakes. They said, “Kids love cooking but sometimes struggle with the ability to complete the tasks. This machine makes it fun to make pancakes, as well as educating a little on the origin of the ingredients.”

The winner of the 2013 HC-hack-a-thon, hosted by Hellocomputer together with Draftfcb, will be announced soon. Stay tuned.

Last week we told you about the three Joburg production companies’ attempt to break the world record for The Fastest Film Ever Made. After 8 days of manic writing, planning, filming and editing, a new challenge is taking place: the fastest film poster ever made for the fastest film ever made.

The team - Team Best, Localala and Ghost Sheep – along with their friends at Halo advertising are embarking on a social media-enhanced, super fast, super fun method of making amazing movie posters.

Tonight at Wolves in Illovo, eight of Joburg’s top designers are gathering to test their skills against the clock.

The designers are:

Nic Christowitz

Koos Groenewald

Eras Gous

Chris Valentine

Shaun Hill

Sheldon Stewart

Estian Fourie

Shaun Botes

Here’s the plan:

At 19:20 the briefing begins. The designers will receive the necessary info – some images and some words. That is all.

At 19:30, they start furiously poster-creating until an hour later when the whistle blows and the posters have to be done.

Thanks to the power of modern technology and Vodacom you’ll be able to watch the whole thing live on their Facebook page by clicking on the Ustream Link, then vote for your favourite before 21:00 when the winner will be announced.

To vote, comment on the Facebook page or via Twitter using the hashtag #FastestFilmSA. A massive R5000 Ben Sherman voucher goes to the winner.

Follow #FastestFilmSA on Twitter to keep updated and get info about the screenings. Check out www.facebook.com/FastestFilmEverMade to see what they’ve achieved so far.

The winners of the 2012-2013 Fresh Talent Sustainable Design Competition, hosted by local NPO Shift, were announced recently. The competition began in September 2012 with a call to young creatives to submit proposals and designs that addressed the issues of sustainability under the brief Small Change, A World of Difference.

The project aims to raise awareness amongst young South Africans about the role that design can play in developing practical and sustainable solutions to every day challenges. In addition to their title and prize money, the winners will go on a knowledge exchange trip to Sweden in August 2013 to learn more about the Scandinavian ways of urban sustainability and integrated design.

These were the winning ideas:

1st Place: Bronwen Smith and Rudolph Jordaan – S.A.S. Integrated Sustainability Awareness System

This clever concept aims to activate a large community, such as Cape Town, to be environmentally conscious through an online points based system. The system incentivizes citizens to be more ‘green’ by measuring households’ impacts through collating data related to their sustainable consumption habits, such as electricity savings, or environmentally-friendly purchases or chosing to take communal transport. The system is useful for individuals and households, while also offering a valuable data collating service to municipalities.

2nd Place: Colin Tomas - Seeding Guide

This instructional guide has seeds embedded in biodegradable paper that dissolves quickly and allows the seeds to germinate. The guide features indigenous (regional) medicinal and food plants and will be produced in South Africa’s national languages.

3rd Place: Gaironesa Clayton and Chad Atkins - R3

Their prototype is a mechanism that uses old newspaper and turns it into a briquette which replaces firewood, promotes recycling and helps solve the problem of deforestation.

Wild Card Winner: Ryan Allan - RE: H2O

RE: H2O works to recycle and filter bath and laundry water so that households can channel water into productive systems such as food gardens, providing opportunities for economic activity and environmental rehabilitation within low-income and impoverished communities.

To advertise this year’s event, Oppikoppi – South Africa’s biggest, thorniest, dustiest, craziest, 19-year-old music festival – has booked a whole smattering of billboards across the country. And they want you to feature in them.

The theme for Oppikoppi 2013 is Bewilderbeast inspired by Badly Drawn Boy’s album “The hour of the Bewilderbeast”. They got local Michael Taylor to bring the theme to life. Now they’re running the Oppikoppi Beastie-est boys (and girls) Billboard Competition and this is the call for entries.

The much-anticipated 2013 finalists of Design Indaba’s annual Most Beautiful Object In South Africa competition have been announced, and they include pieces by some of our favourites.

The MBOISA finalists were nominated by a mix of design journalists and cultural commentators in South Africa and will be voted for by the public to determine a winner. The aim of the initiative being to question what constitutes beauty and encourage a wider definition of the word – one that includes attributes such as social significance, economic impact, usability, sustainability and even humour.

Votes are cast via SMS (R1 per vote) and the winner will be announced on the afternoon of Sunday 3 March at the Design Indaba Expo, where all the pieces will be on show.

Here they are:

Zanzan Umbrella by Gareth Cowden, Babatunde

Nominated by Jackie Burger, editor, ELLE.

“A very simple object inherent to our cultural landscape, done in an array of innovative prints! Finally, the humble umbrella steps up as a modern, colloquial and pop-culture accessory serving the dual purpose of functional fashion.”

To vote for the Zanzan Umbrella SMS “MBOISA Babatunde” to 43431.

Golden Fold Necklace by Katherine-Mary Pichulik

Nominated by Sarah Buitendach, editor, Sunday Times Home Weekly.

“Katherine-Mary Pichulik’s pieces are bold and eye-catching, fun and sexy. I especially like the fact that her jewellery is made from humble, everyday materials such as coloured rope and string, which she transforms into embellishments that are very sophisticated.”

To vote for the Golden Fold Necklace SMS “MBOISA Pichulik” to 43431.

The Soweto Theatre by Lawrence Chibwe, Afritects Architects

Nominated by Laureen Rossouw, editor, ELLE Decoration.

“I love the confident, bold, colourful architecture of this iconic theatre in SA’s most famous township and the immediate impact it has on its surroundings. It has three indoor venues and an undercover outside venue for productions. It is also built close to the railway station, taxi rank and Rea bus stop in Jabulani, which gives commuters a chance to interact with and enjoy this inspiring and aspirational landmark. A great example of urban regeneration and a symbol of progress for all South Africans.”

To vote for the Soweto Theatre SMS “MBOISA Afritects” to 43431.

Mechanical Bureau by Joe Paine

Nominated by Sumien Brink, content director, VISI.

“In total sync with the new steam punk movement, Joe Paine has designed a mechanical space-saving desk that the trendiest urbanite will covet. Joe was inspired by discarded 19th century farm machinery. The desk is made from Cape teak, medium density fibreboard (MDF) and mild steel, and uses a system of gears and cranks to open and close. Small workspaces will never look the same again.”

To vote for the Mechanical Bureau SMS “MBOISA Paine” to 43431.

Pebble Dress by Gavin Rajah

Nominated by Malibongwe Tyilo, Blogger, Skattie What Are You Wearing?

“The Pebble Dress combines to great effect some of the most relevant design influences at the moment: leather, ombre, texture and craft. Their unity creates a completely resolved design piece. At first glance, your eye is attracted by the complete garment and it’s almost scale-like appearance. A closer look reveals the incredible amount of work and precision that has gone into creating not only the garment but also an entirely new fabric.”

To vote for the Pebble Dress SMS “MBOISA Rajah” to 43431.

Slice Cutting Board by Jonathan Fundudis, Snapp Design

Nominated by Brandt Botes, founder, Studio Botes.

“Something as simple and seemingly mundane as a kitchen cutting board is given added functionality through the process of design. A solution so clear it begs the question ‘Why has no one done that before?’ Designer Jonathan Fundudis mentions that his approach is to design objects that leave you with a ‘smile in the mind’. Simple and smart, this is exactly what the Slice cutting board says to me.”

To vote for the Slice Cutting Board SMS “MBOISA Snapp” to 43431.

Gustav Greffrath’s Interpretation of the 1975 Pipeline Gun

Nominated by Garth Walker, founder, Mister Walker.

“Spider’s uber-sleek hand-shaped ‘gun’ – surely an apt description – is itself a thing of beauty and an object of lust. Handmade and shaped by the eye, it’s an amazing creation – simple to look at, hold or caress. Suggesting speed, agility and efficiency, the board’s deceptively light weight defies its size. The interesting intervention is that the artist perfectly retained the essential ‘gunness’ of the original shape, yet the top half dipped in glossy Delft blue adds to the allure – and hints at the water for which it is intended…”

To vote for Gustav Greffrath’s Surfboard SMS “MBOISA Dutchmann” to 43431.

Nominated by the Design Indaba Expo team.

“This is what making is all about: one man in his studio, setting himself a challenge and lovingly creating something for himself rather than simply going out and buying it. Stubbs has invented his own solution for a durable but light bike by creating a protective skin of wood impregnated with carbon. As cycling begins to permeate South African culture, it is inspiring to see one artisan elevating bicycle design to a work of handmade art.”

To vote for David Stubbs’s bicycle SMS “MBOISA Stubbs” to 43431.

Nominated by Lauren Beukes, novelist, Zoo City and Moxyland.

“I chose this as my Most Beautiful Object of 2012 because it’s a symbol of our fraught, messy, wonderful country and the problems we still face in talking about race and gender, but also because it’s about the beauty of our most important democratic rights, the freedom of the press and freedom of expression to talk about it.”

To vote for City Press Newspaper SMS “MBOISA City Press” to 43431.

Nominated by Gregor Naude, editor, Enjin.

“Ronel Jordaan’s visibility shopping bag/vest is function made form. I think it nicely encapsulates the idea that, in addition to creating beautiful objects, good design offers solutions to everyday challenges.”

Nominated by Robynne Kahn, fashion director, special projects,Cosmopolitan and founder, afashionfriend.co.za.

“I love her use of colour and graphic prints. The way she has used patterns and shapes in a modern, updated and fashion-forward way is exciting.

The 60th Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity is making this year’s Young Lions competition a little tougher. Instead of creating a print campaign, the entry round is calling for young creative teams to conceptualise, film and edit a 60 second commercial in just 48 hours. The ad has to be filmed entirely on a mobile device.

Cinemark - the local representative for Cannes Lions – is giving creatives under the age of 28 the chance to represent South Africa at the 2013 event through a local version of the competition. Registered teams will be briefed on Tuesday 26 February to work on an ad for a non-profit organisation. The winners will go up against the best Young Lions entrants from around the world at the 2013 festival in June.

Winners of the international competition will receive gold, silver and bronze medals and the winning team will be presented with a gold medal during the Film, Film Craft, Branded Entertainment, Titanium & Integrated Lions Awards Ceremony on 22 June 2013. They will also be included on the Shots post Cannes show reel and the Shots e-newsletter after Cannes and they will be able to view shots.net for one month after the Cannes Festival. Members of the winning gold team will receive a full delegate registration to Cannes Lions 2014 including hotel accommodation, as well as a limited-edition photographic print donated by Getty Images.

Register at www.cinemark.co.za.
