Cell C’s new image – Trevor Noah and all

After a Youtube clip of Trevor Noah ranting about cellphone networks during one of his stand-up routines made it’s way around the internet, Cell C placed a public apology in an ad in the Sunday Times. This was on the 1st of August. In the 9 days that followed, Cell C has rebranded, appointed Trevor Noah as CEO (Customer Experience Officer), created an ad campaign to announce this and have a new website, www.telltrevor.co.za, where consumers can send in any complaints or issues they have with Cell C. Global Moguls

This ambitious and exciting campaign is the brainchild of husband and wife team, Phillip and Jade Carlisle. They came up with the idea of Global Moguls after working on Blast Beat – an educational programme run in schools and colleges to find and educate potential musicians. The initiative is backed by multi-millionaire investor Simon Dolan. Klipdrift & Cola is presenting Global Moguls in South Africa. The big idea – Global Moguls is a web-based talent search for the next great unsigned band. What’s unique about the search is that it’s not only about the band but is also a launchpad for the entire creative team behind the band. The people responsible for the band’s identity from their logo to their photography to their music video. Want to know how it works?
Teams of creatives find unsigned bands to collaborate with, or an unsigned band finds a team of creatives to work with. Together they work through a series of music and media industry related tasks, starting with a rough-cut video and single track, moving to photography, design and finishing with a full-length music video.
Umbro SA Crest Design
Umbro SA asked two top local designers to create a crest that represents South African football culture. TwoShoes Graphic Design and Mingo Lamberti’s Brad Hodgkiss have been soaking up the country’s vibe during the World Cup to capture the essence and impact football has on our nation and our cultures. These expressions have been produced as a limited edition collection that was exhibited alongside Umbro World Champions Collection this week at Neighbourhood in Long Street.
Umbro also put the brief out as a competition to designers at Vega in Cape Town and the Red & Yellow School of Logic & Magic. Two Shoes and Brad Hodgkiss selected the winning design submitted by Lauren Smith and Nikita da Silva of Red & Yellow, which has seen their designs being produced in this limited range as well. Umbro asked them to a select a charity to which all profits from the South African range will be donated, and to keep it in the spirit of football the girls chose Oasis Place (http://www.charitysa.co.za/oasisplace.html).
The South African designers were not short of inspiration being in the thick of the World Cup celebrations and this is clearly portrayed in their final designs, which capture some of the energy the nation has been experiencing as hosts to this tournament.
TwoShoes Design: “Our emblem represents soccer as a uniting force for our nation. Mzantsi United: A statement and the peoples soccer club. 11 stars are for each player on the team and the 11 official languages of our country – 11 languages for a diverse nation”.
Mingo Lamberti’s Brad Hodgkiss: “I wanted the design to have a traditional crest shape and then add items to it that changed its overall feeling. For example, I took inspiration from the makaraba’s and how they have circular shaped in their designs with little pictures inside. I also used shapes and line-work that is found in the African cultures to give it a vibrant African feel. My inspiration was the feeling of being at a soccer game. I wanted to create a feeling that the crest was vibrant, full with movement and colour.”
Lauren Smith and Nikita da Silva, Red & Yellow School of Logic and Magic: “We drew inspiration from other SA artists, urban hair salons with their hand drawn stylized advertising, shweshwe fabrics that are traditional patterned African fabrics and stitching designs. We chose to simplify our crest to make it more iconic. It has a rural feel and the colours are natural and traditional. We also used a typeface which looks hand drawn to carry through a traditional authentic feel”. Abafana bam ba dlala kahle translated means “My boys are playing well” which elders of a community would commonly be heard saying in appreciation for the younger players.

HelloComputer x CPB

A unique gift package made by HelloComputer (www.hellocomputer.com) that was sent to Crispin Porter & Bogusky (http://www.cpbgroup.com/) as a gesture of goodwill after the completion of the Bcycle Project.
A plush version of HelloComputer’s mascot, “Hal” was taken to various destinations around Cape Town and photographed with his visiting friend, “Al” (After Alex Bogusky of Crispin Porter & Bogusky). In the hardcover book that is supplied in the package, a photographic journey takes Hal and Al from the Airport to the stadiums, and from Cape Town’s best burger joints to it’s most respected Tattoo parlors.
HelloComputer also put together an online gallery (www.hellocomputer.com/halandal) so you can check out some of the pictures included in the book. With design, art direction and illustration by HelloComputer, the plush toy Hal was created by the fabulously talented Danielle Clough (We love Eskies!). New FEDISA campaign

The following campaign was created by Formd, a New Media and Print Design agency in Cape Town. In 2008 Formd was approached by FEDISA (Future Excellence Design Institute of South Africa) to refresh their corporate identity and also assist them with other marketing and branding elements. Formd originated and developed the concept of photographing actual students at FEDISA to show prospective students the diverse range of students currently pursuing their studies at FEDISA and hopefully someone that they could relate to. These photos were used as the main focal point of the website and the same concept was used for the FEDISA poster campaign which rolled off the press in February 2010. All art direction, copy and photography was done by Charl du Plessis (Formd).
*Please Note: The poster design that features the copy line “The Tom Ford is my Shepherd”, as a play on “The Lord is my Shepherd”, generated some debate and controversy amongst the students and parents, leading to the Academic Director and CEO, Mr Allen Leroux, deciding not to go to print with that specific design. As 10and5 is a showcase for the South African creative industry, we decided to include it purely on creative merit and to possibly generate more debate.
New Logo and site for Mingo Lamberti

Mingo Lamberti’s new logo is inspired by a ring that Mingo Lamberti was given over 70 years ago by his wife, my grandmother. Although we took a bit of creative license on the typeface the rest is exactly the same. It was also important to keep the heritage and for the reason we have used a older style of illustration to keep in within an era, but still make it appealing.
