Hellocomputer and Draftfcb’s second annual Hack-A-Thon took place last week with the theme: Hack For Kids. A total of 6 teams (4 in Joburg and 2 in Cape Town) had just 48-hours to conceptualise and build a working prototype.

The briefing took place on 9 May at 18h00. Teams then battled it out to completion for the judging at 18h00 on Saturday, 11 May. The creations were judged by Danette Breitenbach (Advantage), Fran Luckin (Ogilvy), Brent Singer (Network), Brett Morris (Draftfcb), Theo Ferreira (Aqua) and 6-year old twin boys.

This year’s Hack-A-Thon saw the creation of:

An automated educational pancake-making assistant

Created by Team Thingking (Cape Town), this project helped kids make pancakes easily by running a mixing bowl underneath different stages of ingredients and mixing processes until completion on the frying pan.

A miniature DIY iPhone projector package

Team Last Min (Joburg) created a crafty, quick and easy DIY way to build an iPhone Projector inside a box. Kids could also assemble one themselves if they were willing.

A Wii remote-controlled Oreo catapult

This project was created by team Fear and Loathing in HackVegas (Cape Town). As simple as the name suggests, a mechanical catapult operated by a Wii remote was used to launch and dunk Oreos into a glass of milk.

A live online interactive puppet show

Created by team Boris The Animal Show (Joburg), this interactive puppet show was controlled through audience interaction on a blog that ran live, parallel to the show. The puppets asked the children questions that would sway the story in different directions.

The Grand Prize Winners: Team Ah Yeah’s (Joburg) entirely hacked kid’s bedroom, Daddy I Don’t Wanna Go To Bed.

The winning idea was simple; the door of the room closed a circuit as parents left, turning the entire room into a gaming console. The bed, pillows and even Ben Ten posters were rigged to become the game’s controllers. Sensors allowed kids to jump on the bed while being mirrored by their imaginary friend, pilot a rocket-propelled dinosaur through space as well as play a multiplayer pillow fight and – via a score counter – see who won. If the door was opened at any stage during play the circuit was broken and the game was hidden from any meddling parents’ eyes.

The Kids’ Choice Award Winners: Team A Tribe Called Quest’s (Joburg) Scaletrix race, powered by eating your veggies.

This project incentivised children to eat their veggies; the faster the players of the game ate, the faster their car moved on the track. For each lap completed either player was automatically rewarded with a gumball.

Pretty awesome stuff, we can’t wait to see what’s produced at the next one. Congrats to the winners!

Isuzu approached digital agency NATIVE to create an exciting campaign to launch their new range of Isuzu KBs to 4×4 enthusiasts. The result is Isuzu Trail View, a Google Street View-style campaign that allows users to ‘go off-road, online.’

Isuzu provided vehicles, the Offroad Academy provided drivers and NATIVE climbed on board to map out 4X4 trails around the country with an innovative 360-degree camera mounted to the vehicle.

Executive Creative Director, Ryan McManus, says, “While doing our research we realised that existing content on 4X4 trails is very bland, contradicting the experience of 4X4ing which offers such a rich visual and tactile experience. This inspired us to bring the 4X4 experience to life digitally, by providing a trail view of the most challenging 4X4 routes in the country. Isuzu Trail View goes where Google Street View has yet to venture and prepares 4×4 drivers for the journey before they’ve even checked the oil and water. Using Isuzu Trail View, 4X4 enthusiasts can now experience the entire trail online”.

An embedded social media layer allows the community to share, post comments, add videos and photos on the site. The integrated campaign is supported by Isuzu’s Facebook and Twitter pages and driven by print, outdoor, direct media and its devoted community of 4×4 enthusiasts.

Experience it at isuzutrailview.co.za.

In time for World Environment Day on 5 June every year, Yuppiechef hosts their annual Eat For The Earth fund-raising campaign in support of Soil For Life, an organisation that teaches impoverished families to grow their own food. This year they teamed up with digital agency Knnktr to take the 2013 campaign to the next level.

The idea is to host a meal, invite your friends and get them to donate to Soil for Life in exchange for the meal.

How it works:

Knnktr have created an empty vertical garden, with a time-lapse photography rig at the Yuppiechef headquarters. Participants click on an empty spot in the wall to connect with Facebook and create a meal/event. The Yuppiechef team add a plant to the wall garden for each meal and the more donations your event gets, the more love the Yuppiechef crew give your plant.

An awesome graphical overlay allows visitors to the site to see who each plant belongs to, what their meal event is all about and how much money they’ve raised.

Every cent raised goes to Soil For Life to help them help others.

Check it out and get involved at eatfortheearth.com.

True to their name, Fast & Remarkable conceptualised, designed, built and launched a brand new website for Luke Dale Roberts’ The Test Kitchen in just one week; and in time for the World’s Best 50 Restaurants award ceremony where the restaurant received the One to Watch award.

The concept behind the responsive redesign was to showcase the full experience of dining at The Test Kitchen, from the distinctive industrial space to the chefs performing in the open kitchen to a gallery of the plated food-art served there.

However, our favourite part of the website by far is the collection of ‘making of’ videos produced by Dreamcatcher Productions. The videos were initially made for Luke’s presentation on thought provoking food at the 2012 Eat Out Conference, where The Test Kitchen won Best Restaurant in SA.

The videos demonstrate the making of a selection of Luke’s intricate dishes. Dreamcatcher says, “We decided on a relatively fast edit of macro shots, combined with hypersensitive sounds in selected spots. The challenge was to break each dish into its smallest sensible components, filming each action individually and then editing the clip so that the elements were there long enough to understand, but quick enough to create interest and speed.”

WWF Rhino Raid is Flint Sky Interactive’s first mobile game and the best thing we’ve seen all week. The aim of the project is to create awareness of the ever-growing rhino poaching crisis in SA while also raising funds for WWF’s rhino initiatives.

This concept of “playing for good” is part of Flint Sky’s philosophy of creating engaging projects that further environmental and sustainability causes.

How the game works:

Players take the role of Rad the Rhino who keeps up a running charge against poachers and their arsenal of weapons. With the help of his trusted ally, Horn Bill, Rad has to dodge the flying hand grenades and automatic rifle fire; jump over exploding barrels…then thump the poachers as he chases after their getaway trucks and get one charge closer to Mr Big, the kingpin behind the international rhino poaching syndicates.

Rad’s adventure across the African savannah is punctuated by WWF’s key insights into facts about rhinos, the truth behind the rhino poaching scourge, WWF’s rhino conservation projects in South Africa, the supply chain and trade in rhino horn while also importantly debunking myths about rhino horn use.

In a brilliant move, Flint Sky collaborated with creative minds at the top of their game: illustrator Kris ‘Kronk’ Hewitt and musician Markus Wormstorm to bring the game to life. The game’s code was written by Tasty Poison Games for both Android and Apple’s iOS platforms.

In the short time it has been available, the app has been downloaded over 50 000 times with most of the downloads coming from Asia, a key market that drives rhino horn demand.

Hellocomputer and Draftfcb are hosting their second (and first of 2013) 48 hour hack-a-thon in Johannesburg this May. The agencies started the hack-a-thon last year with the aim of encouraging and showcasing a pioneering spirit in creativity and innovation.

The intense 48-hour caffeine-fuelled event sees teams of sharp tech minds and top-shelf creatives bending, forcing or breaking old conventions to create something new and innovative out of the chaos. At last year’s inaugural hack-a-thon, a handful of exceptionally talented teams delivered an equaliser made out of slinkys, an iPhone-controlled quadrocopter and the winning idea, a tweeting hamster. Check him out.

Hellocomputer’s executive creative director, Mark Tomlinson, says, “The first hack-a-thon we held was an awe-inspiring event resulting in incredible innovation, but there are definitely things we’ll be doing a little differently this time round. We have a specific brief and theme, which we must keep under wraps, which we think will make for a whole lot of fun for both contestants and judges. Hack-a-thon is an open event; we want everyone to experience it. Anyone is welcome to pull through, spectate or submit a team if they’re up for the challenge.”

The event takes place at the Hellocomputer and Draftfcb Johannesburg office in Katherine Street, Sandton. Teams will be briefed at 18h00 on May 9th and be given 48 hours to complete their hack before presenting the outcome to the panel of judges. The number one team wins a whopping R 10 000 and the runner up’s prize is R 2 000.

Those interested in entering should visit www.hchack.co.za.

Bester Burke Slingers was briefed to make KykNET top-of-mind when it comes to Afrikaans by creating something that all Afrikaners, young and old, can partake in and feel proud of.

Their response was a campaign that exposes the unique nature of the Afrikaans language and culture to the world, showing how the language has evolved into something so much more than doilies and voortrekkers.

They decided to use Twitter as their platform and the hashtag #DISAFRIKAANS as their call to action, asking the question, “Wat is Afrikaans vir jou?”.

The campaign was launched at this year’s Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK), a festival that celebrates everything Afrikaans, from theatre to music to art and fashion. This move introduced thousands of festivalgoers to #DISAFRIKAANS and inspired them to tweet to the world what Afrikaans means to them.

This is how they did it, “We seeded our campaign at the festival by putting up posters, written as tweets, highlighting the originality of the language and culture. We sent out our dedicated Twiet-Span to educate those who knew little about twitter and set up a Twiet-Stasie where festival goers could interact with the brand, meet the kykNET stars and see what the world has to say about #DISAFRIKAANS. The hashtag quickly caught on and Afrikaners from around the country started expressing themselves in a way that only Afrikaans allows.”

In this campaign by Ogilvy for Cape Town Tourism, Facebook users could send their profiles on holiday to the Mother City. In doing so they were taken on a virtual tour of the best of Cape Town and winners were chosen to go on an all-inclusive trip to city for real.

This is what the agency had to say:

Our client, Cape Town Tourism, briefed us to come up with an online campaign that also promotes the unexpected side of Cape Town. All the small communities, never-heard of places and unearthed gems that can’t be found on Trip Advisor, Lonely Planet, Expedia, or even Google.

So we thought, we can’t send everyone to Cape Town, so let’s send their Facebook profiles instead. Facebook profiles from around the world received a virtual, tailor-made Cape Town holiday that exposed them to all the unexpected places, and finally, a few lucky winners got to experience their Facebook profile’s holiday for themselves.

Here they share the results of the campaign.

At Design Indaba 2013 MTN and MetropolitanRepublic will be introducing the Connector Bot, a beta test proxy droid, developed to connect the disconnected.

The Connector Bot will run a live two-way uplink between Design Indaba and the Tshwane University of Technology, over 1000 kilometres away, so that the students can experience the inspiration of Design Indaba for the very first time.

Engineered by the CSIR, the Connector Bot will be piloted by the students via intuitive touchscreen controls. Seeing through the eye of the Connector Bot, the students will rove around Design Indaba, attending lectures and interacting with speakers like any other delegate.

Another ad campaign featuring SA’s favourite news presenter and his infamous ‘do’. Afrikaans TV station kykNET briefed ad agency Bester Burke Slingers to announce via Facebook that TV legend Riaan Cruywagen would be joining the channel as host of their early morning show, Dagbreek.

In response, the creative team created a Facebook app encouraging the public to ‘Cruy jou kapsel’ (Get the hairstyle). The interface allows users to place a stylized version of Riaan’s legendary hairstyle over their own. Users can then share the finished result as well as make it their profile pic – spawning hundreds of Riaan Cruywagen lookalikes.
