<p>Bester Burke Slingers was briefed to make KykNET top-of-mind when it comes to Afrikaans by creating something that all Afrikaners, young and old, can partake in and feel proud of.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Their response was a campaign that exposes the unique nature of the Afrikaans language and culture to the world, showing how the language has evolved into something so much more than doilies and voortrekkers.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>They decided to use Twitter as their platform and the hashtag #DISAFRIKAANS as their call to action, asking the question, “Wat is Afrikaans vir jou?”.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The campaign was launched at this year&#8217;s Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees<em> (</em>KKNK), a festival that celebrates everything Afrikaans, from theatre to music to art and fashion. This move introduced thousands of festivalgoers to #DISAFRIKAANS and inspired them to tweet to the world what Afrikaans means to them.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This is how they did it, &#8220;We seeded our campaign at the festival by putting up posters, written as tweets, highlighting the originality of the language and culture. We sent out our dedicated Twiet-Span to educate those who knew little about twitter and set up a Twiet-Stasie where festival goers could interact with the brand, meet the kykNET stars and see what the world has to say about #DISAFRIKAANS. The hashtag quickly caught on and Afrikaners from around the country started expressing themselves in a way that only Afrikaans allows.&#8221;</p>

<p>Another ad campaign featuring SA&#8217;s favourite news presenter and his infamous &#8216;do&#8217;. Afrikaans TV station kykNET briefed ad agency Bester Burke Slingers to announce via Facebook that TV legend Riaan Cruywagen would be joining the channel as host of their early morning show, Dagbreek.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>In response, the creative team created a Facebook app encouraging the public to ‘Cruy jou kapsel’ (Get the hairstyle). The interface allows users to place a stylized version of Riaan’s legendary hairstyle over their own. Users can then share the finished result as well as make it their profile pic &#8211; spawning hundreds of Riaan Cruywagen lookalikes.</p>

<p>DStv&#8217;s <a href="http://10and5.com/2012/10/22/dstv-javas-by-ogilvy-jhb-bouffant/" target="_blank">&#8216;Javas&#8217; tv commercial</a> by Ogilvy Johannesburg has become an integrated operation with the new &#8216;Ask Javas&#8217; microsite and social media campaign.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s the story behind the work:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><em>The tv ad introduces Javas, a sage adviser shipwrecked on a remote island who conjures up an answer to every possible problem. Javas graciously invites his fellow islanders to sip from the fountain of his wisdom. These insights, the ad reveals, are all gleaned from the DStv movies, songs and documentaries he watches on his secret television.</em></p>
<p><em> </em></p>
<p><em>The <a href="http://askjavas.dstv.com/" target="_blank">microsite</a> features Javas, seated in his hidden cave on his island, inviting viewers to select a question from “work”, “family” and “love” categories. Once selected, Javas instantly delivers back a video with a witty solution to the dilemma, appropriated from popular culture.</em></p>
<p><em> </em></p>
<p><em>Mimicking a live experience for the viewer, over 35 short videos were produced for the microsite. An interesting feature on the site is the hidden “Easter eggs”, so when viewers scroll over the parrot, for instance, it squawks. These elements are hidden, encouraging viewers to play with the interface and uncover surprises.</em></p>
<p><em> </em></p>
<p><em>From a social media perspective, Javas is very active and available to chat with users and offer his wisdom on his Facebook and Twitter page. Fans can tweet their questions to @AskJavas and he’ll fire back an answer in minutes.</em></p>
<p><em> </em></p>
<p><em>Nimay Parekh, Digital Group Account Director at Ogilvy &amp; Mather Johannesburg, says, “We found a site with the top 500 words used on Twitter, and extracted the top nouns, verbs and adjectives. So if a user asks Javas a question containing one of these keywords (picked up by tweetbots), the relevant answer is given in under 140 characters.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>This clever idea by KingJames for insurance company Santam offered people the chance to be warned before all the scary parts in M-Net&#8217;s Halloween horror movies last night. This is how they did it:</p>

<p>Santam being an insurance company really, really hate it when clients get nasty surprises so they set up a special service to warn viewers of the scariest parts in the Halloween movies. The ad above aired yesterday before 4 scary movies.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The social media team at <a href="http://www.twitter.com/talktosantam" target="_blank">www.twitter.com/<wbr>talktosantam</wbr></a> also set up a special Fright Centre to live tweet warnings (using the hashtag #scarybits) about scares that were coming up during Paranormal Activity and Paranormal Activity 2.</p>

<p>Over the weekend a team of engineering students from CPUT, Cape Speed, were the first from SA to take part in <a href="http://www.formulastudent.com/" target="_blank">Formula Student</a>. The annual race is known as Europe&#8217;s most established educational motorsport competition and is run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The team&#8217;s challenge was to produce a prototype car that was raced against 110 other teams from around the world at Silverstone in the UK.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>To rally support for team Cape Speed, a real-time Scalextric race track, an exact replica of the UK’s Silverstone race track, was built by Saatchi &amp; Saatchi AtPlay and is powered via social networks &#8211; tweets or Facebook likes.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Alan Cronje, creative group head at AtPlay explains how it works: “Each Facebook like or message of support with #capespeed powers the car around the miniature live Silverstone track. The mechanic used is custom built software with a server on the track, which allows the #capespeed hash tag or Facebook ‘like’ to power the lap and the car to continue moving.”</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The 300-piece track, 16 metres long and 12 square metres when instituted, was set up at Canal Walk over the weekend so people could see their car racing in real life.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>If people couldn&#8217;t get to the real life track they could watch their lap via the live streaming video on the Cape Speed website.</p>

<p>Did you know? Chappies has 60 years worth of knowledge on their wrappers.</p>

<p>Senior Brand Manager of Chappies, Suhayl Limbada said that the brand wanted people who have embraced the information age to add to that rich base. To do this Ogilvy Cape Town created an online campaign for the bubblegum that invites Chappies lovers to write their own Did You Know facts. The best of which will be printed on actual Chappies wrappers.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Ogilvy CT copywriter Kate Desmarais gave us some background, &#8220;If you’re a South African there’s a good chance you grew up reading Chappies Did You Knows. So when Kraft approached us to write 250 new Did You Knows we saw it as an opportunity to do something bigger. Something that would leverage the heritage of the iconic brand and give South Africans a chance to be part of the legacy.&#8221;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The campaign kicked off on the 2nd of July and Did You Know submissions can be made through the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/ChappiesSA/app_434759956545988" target="_blank">Chappies SA Facebook page.</a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>SABC2’s Hectic Nine 9 show  is also getting involved by helping consumers hunt for fascinating facts and rewarding people with the best suggestions, by filming a series of special inserts. To further promote the campaign, press packs were sent out including personalised Did You Knows about the bloggers who received them.</p>

<p>On Friday BOS Ice Tea launched a Twitter-activated sampling machine.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The BevMax 4-45, affectionately known as Bev, is more robot than vending machine and was first introduced to the public at the 2012 Design Indaba. She was initially triggered using tokens and was rigged with speakers and cameras to show her inner workings and interact with delegates at the conference. She has since been tweaked to respond to tweets, delivering a BOS Ice Tea whenever her hashtag is used in a tweet.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The idea was conceptualised by BOS&#8217; digital agency <a href="http://cowafrica.com/" target="_blank">Cow Africa,</a> who worked closely with designers Marc Nicholson and Lyall Sprong from <a href="http://thingking.co.za/" target="_blank">Thingking</a> to bring Bev to life and UK-based social media agency, RAAK, to fully realise the Twitter integration.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Follow <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/BOS" target="_blank">@BOS</a> on Twitter, or Like BOS on <a href="http://www.facebook.com/bosicetea" target="_blank">Facebook</a> to keep up with BEV. She is currently at Wembley Square in Cape Town until Friday 22 June and when you find her she’ll reveal her secret hashtag so you can tweet in exchange for a free BOS Ice Tea.</p>
