Stan The Man with the plan…. This session is dedicated to Stanley Parkies our first host. He has passed on, but the beat must go on and this is our farewell to him.

In order to keep things fresh and expose new people to the streets, we have a live act line up with two groups that have never performed in Soweto before and its a blessing that we have them with us. First is Bongiziwe Mabandla and The Fridge. This is a three guitarist band that sings folk music. 5th Floor is a hip hop duo from the streets of Cape Town that is breathing fresh air to the hip hop infested market of South Africa. They have already blessed Party People hosted by DJ Kenzhero.

On the DJ line up we have the Residents, Khumza with a selection dedicated to Stan, Omi ( On a visit from Durban), Skindeep who last graced the decks last year and Wireless_G our WWUD (Worldwide Under Ground) DJ.

Our Host is Tall Ass Mo and he will be keeping you laughing with Skhumba. These two comedians are bubbling under the surface in the comedy circuit of South Africa.

Facebook event page

Hip Hip Hoooray! Thesis Social Jam Session is turning two years. Yes it’s only been two years it feels like we’ve been jamming a life time. From the early days when we jammed inside Thesis Concept Store, to yesterday when we jammed outside and braving the winter blues, to today when we are lounging in couches with heaters and stretch marquees with the “never compromising” good music. It’s been a great journey.

Happening every first Sunday of the month, at Mofolo Village in Soweto with music as the foundation, The DJ booth has been endowed by big guns and prominent contests from DJ Oil(France), Kid Fonque, The Wedding DJs, DJ Mdoo, Nathi Quwe, Music At Last, Paledi; The Layders; PO(US) and now Kenzhero. Live performances; breed intensity between the crowd and performers. The best performances by Motlatsi; Future History; The Name Is Taken; Dirty Paraffin; Babu; P2DHI(US); Reebirth; Mnandi Blues & the list goes on and on and on.

TSJS is setting the world on fire on The 1st of August, to celebrate its second birthday. DJ Kenzhero will be our guest, also on the guest list is DJ Nana; Deep Soweto will be in the space; very large regular; feeding you home-grown kasi hip hop. Nature will be coming back to make us glad to be here: listening to the music. For the second time; on our 2nd birthday. Our resident DJ’s keeping the residential suite sweet as they welcome you and our guest performers to arrive. Springer; Omi and Wireless G deserve their own sentence of sweet melodies.

Omi has been with us from the beginning, since 3 August 2008. Known to the TSJS crew as historian DJ. He plays a sound with soul & the knowledge of its history. What ever you want to know about what he’s playing: he’ll tell you; just listen to his mix and his biggest influence is Giles Peterson (another great historian). Wireless G has been a great part of the residence. His play is fresh and futuristic. I’m not even saying playing futuristic stuff; but he illustrates a new point of about the DJing concept; conceptual and a hard core brand manager. Springer on the other hand has been a playing friend for a while now since the jams started. Took several months to get ready to join our ship of reverberates. His new, fresh and a break beat or two.

Liquid Gamz will be gaming on them PS3 consoles for your entertainment. Nyambose’s kitchen; next door; will food us till we close; we know how hungry the sounds of TSJS can make us.
I can’t wait to see you there…:)

More on the Thesis Social Jam Sessions on their blog, here.

South African music doesn’t always get the attention it deserves, despite a wealth of local talent. This will now change, thanks to Cell C’s new PhotoCode application, which will help put the spotlight on the country’s hottest bands.

PhotoCode is a unique spin on new generation barcode technology that allows select South African bands to share their latest tracks, exclusive images, wallpapers and ringtones with a wider audience than before. South Africans will be able to download this content and more using Cell C’s new PhotoCode reader powered by BeeTagg Pro.

In addition, PhotoCode enables inanimate matter to come alive, for example, a newspaper can provide access to a video clip, a shopping window can provide information about items exhibited, a t-shirt can carry an electronic business card and a billboard can provide access to a concert or a link to a website.
In conjunction with Cell C’s partners YOU, Huisgenoot, People, Sunday Times, The Times, 5FM, Multichoice and Oppikoppi, Cell C will introduce the general public to this exciting concept this week. It will be rolled out further via retailers, restaurants and bars, amongst others in future.

Cell C’s PhotoCode users can expect exclusive content from bands such as 11th Hour, Alleen na Desember, Chromium, Dance, You’re on Fire, Die Heuwels Fantasties, eF-eL, Knave, Only Forever, Rambling Bones, Taxi Violence, Thieve, Tuin Dwergies, Van Coke Kartel and Wrestlerish.

It’s a matter of see it, snap it and open up a whole new world. To unlock this world, customers can download the PhotoCode reader onto their cell phones, keep their eyes peeled for a PhotoCode in the print or broadcast media, snap a photograph of it and let Cell C do the rest.

Step by Step guide to how PhotoCode works:

Step 1
Get the PhotoCode reader:
•	sms your name to 32357
•	you’ll receive an sms with a download link
•	click on the link to download

Step 2
Keep a look out for a Cell C PhotoCode in participating media

Step 3
When you spot one, snap a photograph of it using your PhotoCode reader

Step 4

For the duration of the world cup, adidas Orignals did something truly original and took over almost an entire building in Cape Town for a month and turned it into the place to be. With the help of some very dedicated locals – A Word Of Art, astore, The Kitchen and The Woodstock Industrial Centre – they managed to create a brand success story and deliver on their promise of a place to CELEBRATE THE FIFA WORLD CUP™ WITH FRIENDS. This is a wrap up piece on the campaign that saw an average of 200 visitors a day and over 3000 visitors in total to Three Stories over the month period. Marketers and event planners take note.

Press Release:

For the duration of the FIFA World Cup 2010™, adidas Originals invited the city of Cape Town to “celebrate originality” and experience the World Cup in a way that only adidas Originals could bring to life.

To make this happen, adidas Originals and Cape Town art group, /A Word of Art, came together to host Three Stories – a one-month-long event held at the Woodstock Industrial Centre. The event included a series of art exhibitions, creative events, live painting sessions, open music nights and live DJ sets. The venue, made up of five main areas, included The Apartment, The Skate Area, /AWOA Art Space, The Kitchen and the apop store, in collaboration with trend retailer, astore.

The Apartment, housed on the 3rd floor, quickly became the heart of Three Stories and welcomed the city, night after night, to hang out, watch the game and experience the World Cup fever. The space soon became a true home away from home for both locals and visitors to the city. While guests were glued to the huge HD projector screen, Woodstock’s much-loved eatery, The Kitchen, prepared delicious food that kept guests well fed during the cold winter nights. Three Stories also invited over 30 music acts to perform in the living space, including some of the hottest, on-the-scene DJs and acoustic bands, each one bringing a unique and refreshing vibe to The Apartment.

The Skate Area, on the 2nd floor, directly under The Apartment, became the regular hangout for the city’s skater kids. Three Skates, Three Stories’ ramp competition and skate battle, judged by the National Skate Association (NSA), invited skaters to show off their street skills and clean tricks on the Three Stories mini ramp. Prizes included adidas Originals gear, a free tattoo inked by the artists at Sins of Style and an original Mark Gonzalez illustration that was kindly donated to Three Stories, by Gonzalez himself, to auction off with all proceeds going to the NGO Write on Africa. adidas Originals bought one of these pieces and proudly awarded it to the Three Skates winner.

Three Stories, in association with /AWOA Art Space, was also proud to present a series of six art exhibitions. The exhibitions successfully brought together South Africa’s most respected urban and new brow artists, illustrators and designers, and celebrated the art movement that is currently taking place in the heart of Woodstock. A new exhibition was added to the space every week and over 31 days, the space grew and evolved into a hub of creativity, showcasing South Africa’s very best talent. The Three Stories series of exhibitions is currently still showing and will remain open to the public Thursday to Saturday, 10h30 to 16h30, until 14 August 2010. Alternatively, all artwork can be viewed online at www.a-word-of-art.co.za

With minimal pre-event media coverage, Three Stories really put the power of word-of-mouth to the test. News of the project spread rapidly across the city and within the first few days of opening, word on the street was that Three Stories was the place to be. An average of 200 city lingerers rushed in daily, to keep-up with the World Cup matches and to experience Cape Town’s buzzing art scene and nightlife. Over 150 artists and 30 musicians were involved in Three Stories, bringing the best of Cape Town to the project.

By the time the whistle blew in the World Cup final match, a total of more than 3000 people had freely experienced Three Stories. As well as creating a space for people to hang out and experience the city’s art, music and creativity, the project also aimed to build and create a platform for the creative community in Cape Town. Three Stories will live on to affect the positive growth of the cultural scene and has set a benchmark for all future cultural events.

adidas Originals successfully brought the city together – sports fanatics, street skaters, the art crowd, the cool kids, the young, the old and even entire families. The city united at Three Stories to celebrate originality and more importantly, the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. It was a special project for everyone involved and made a lasting impression on those who visited. adidas Originals was proud to bring the creativity of the people and festivities of the FIFA World Cup 2010™ from the streets, where originality lives, to Three Stories.

This ambitious and exciting campaign is the brainchild of husband and wife team, Phillip and Jade Carlisle. They came up with the idea of Global Moguls after working on Blast Beat – an educational programme run in schools and colleges to find and educate potential musicians. The initiative is backed by multi-millionaire investor Simon Dolan. Klipdrift & Cola is presenting Global Moguls in South Africa. The big idea – Global Moguls is a web-based talent search for the next great unsigned band. What’s unique about the search is that it’s not only about the band but is also a launchpad for the entire creative team behind the band. The people responsible for the band’s identity from their logo to their photography to their music video. Want to know how it works?

Teams of creatives find unsigned bands to collaborate with, or an unsigned band finds a team of creatives to work with. Together they work through a series of music and media industry related tasks, starting with a rough-cut video and single track, moving to photography, design and finishing with a full-length music video.

A team/band collaboration gets their own profile page on the Global Moguls platform, where they upload their work.
The team then recruits fans through viral marketing and social media such as facebook, twitter, myspace and Youtube. Fans have to vote, rate and comment on the tasks as they are completed during the contest. The first critical task is to get the 500 “YES” votes required from the fans to progress past task 1.

The winners in design, photography, marketing and videography receive product prizes from Apple, as well as the opportunity to work with Sacha Waldman on a music video featuring the winning band, which will be premiered on MK. Sacha has worked with artists such as 50 Cent, Eminem, Jay-Z and Bowie. The 6 top-rated bands progress to a live music event to be hosted at Ratanga Junction headlined by Jack Parow.

The band that emerges as the eventual winner wins cash through sponsored downloads of their winning track, a management contract and a professional music video directed by Sacha Waldman. Global Moguls will also find these bands endorsements, sponsorships, live tours and other opportunities.

The South African leg of the competition has been launched with more than 500 bands and creative teams already signed up. Registration closes on 31 July. The UK competition follows in September.

Poete Clothing – Wear Your Music

Proudly South African, Poete Clothing was founded in 2009 by Pretoria local JW Goosen. His passion for music and design naturally translated into that of an independent fashion label.

“The word poete is French for poet and this describes the muse of our designs perfectly. We want to reach out to people, artists and laymen alike. That first step is usually a warm greeting but in this case just a quote “learn who you are and be such”, he says. “Poete Clothing is inspired by the youth, culture and the music that our daily lives revolve around. With the strong belief that the ideas derived from daily lives are more a desire that a religion, we are intent on presenting a real and sincere concept and therefore the gist of our designs are usually beyond the graphics on our shirts”, Goosen continues.
Involving bands such as Van Coke Kartel, Yesterday’s Pupil, 7 Stukke Silwer and Oorlog Frankenstein Poete Clothing is a brand that focuses primarily on a unique, retro style for the creative individual and music lover.

With a very successful range of t-shirts currently in circulation the team is looking forward to the launch of the full Poete men’s range along with the Poete Belle woman’s range in early 2011.
