The fictional Pure Beer Society where the latest Windhoek TV ads are set has been reimagined in real life bars and taverns. Headed up by The Jupiter Drawing Room, the extension of the TV campaign has seen existing venues in Centurion and Mamelodi become Windhoek Pure Beer Society HQs. A further 18 are planned to launch around the country during the remainder of the year.

The concept was created when TJDR was approached to created branded merchandise and furniture for key outlets.

Three local artisans were chosen to create bespoke pieces for the venues. James Mudge, known for his clean lines and use of natural materials, created a large communal table, which features a timeline of the history of Windhoek beer and the beer tasting process engraved in the wood. Lighting expert Ryan Matchett designed a bottle pendant and vat lights using recycled Windhoek bottles, brass and copper. Jared Odell designed a chair and a small table, using green Windhoek crates as bases.

The roll-out of these venues correlates with a new brand campaign, focusing on men who are ‘Made of the Right Stuff’. The campaign tells stories of inspirational men with the first ambassador being mountaineer Sibusiso Vilane.

Angie Batis – Art Director, Lucky Pony blogger and co-owner of Wolves and The Good Luck Club in Joburg – teamed up with Nicholas Christowitz – freelance designer and co-founder of Says Who – to design the Instant Grass Joburg office.

Instant Grass is a consumer collaboration agency whose core Joburg team is 6 people but who works with networks of consumers, meaning their office needs to be able to accomodate as many as 30 people on certain days. As a solution the duo had hexagon stools made that together work as a honeycomb-patterned coffee table but provide temporary seating if taken apart.

Angie and Nic worked on a tight budget to design, source and commission a 14 seater table, a bicycle chandelier, a bookshelf wall made from crates filled with interesting objects and books and a street art mural of the Instant Grass JHB team. They also created a street-facing mural with pyramid lights and the words “Good Behaviour” which is the company’s motto.

Anikesh Ramani and Gavin Thomas individually source and recommission all the Mid-Century and Scandinavian pieces that can be found in Parkhurst’s most stylish furniture store, MØDERNIST.

We stopped by, had a look around, and asked the duo a few questions about the space, the MØDERNIST aesthetic, and the difference between Scandinavian and Mid-Century design.

Where is your space?

On 4^th Ave. (cnr. 12^th St.) Parkhurst

What about the location appeals to you?

It’s a corner shop with an authentic ’50s façade (including original window frames) on a busy street in a bustling neighbourhood.

What is the MØDERNIST aesthetic?

Clean, simple, minimal.

What is the story behind the store?

Gavin had a small shop called Wasteland at 44 Stanley Avenue > I was a good client of his > we became friends > we expanded on this existing business model > MØDERNIST was born.

The MØDERNIST feels more like a friend’s lounge (albeit a friend with very good taste) than a furniture showroom. Was this the intention?

The intention is to be a furniture showroom while suggesting how the pieces could be used in an environment. We subscribe to a less linear layout, which allows for a more relaxed shopping experience.

If the Modernist were a lounge, who would be found hanging out there and what might they be doing?

Elvis in his fat years.

You’ve held intimate live music events in the space before – how does this add to/relate to what the space is about?

We like music. We like working on interesting collaborations. We have the space, why not utilise it?

And the “automotive pieces”?

We’ve had a couple of vintage Triumph motorbikes in and out of the shop. A 1935 Tiger T70 and a 1956 Tiger T 110. We don’t really make money on these, they are mainly for the interest value and a great example of classic and timeless design.

What defines Scandinavian/Mid-Century design? Are these two styles actually similar, or are they completely different despite often being lumped together?

Scandinavia relates to Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway & Iceland. Mid century refers to a period, mainly the 50’s and 60’s which is the era that most of our pieces come from. Specifically the Danes and the Swedes were prolific designers during this time. Therefore, you could have a piece that is both Scandinavian in origin and Mid-Century in period although they are not mutually exclusive.

 How would you say this aesthetic relates to the South Africa/Johannesburg context?

Due to the simple, clean design, these pieces are timeless and work in a global market not exclusive to any particular place.  Due to this quality and their history, you’ll find them anywhere where people embrace good taste & appreciate good design.

What music is playing in the Modernist?

The National, King Krule, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, About Group, Daniel Lanois, Fleet Foxes, Atlas Sound, Timber Timbre, The Black Keys, Jim White… should we keep going?

What will the space never see?

Bling.

Food stylist and consultant Maranda Engelbrecht will share thoughts about food and excerpts from her beautiful new book, which launches 9 October. Interior Architect Nick Criticos, Store Design Manager for Woolworths, will discuss new directions for retail display on his return from a scouting trip abroad. Stylist Tracy Lynch will be giving a report back on her recent trip to Paris for Paris Design Week and her visit to the studio of French designer Frédérique Morrel. And dynamic duo Aidan Hart and Lawrence Holmes of Inhouse Brand Architects will reveal the impact of changing lifestyles on office design, and what the office of the future is starting to look like.

This is what they created and how they did it, “There is a running club that meets every Wednesday and runs set out routes from the actual shop. We decided to create a space that functions as a modern take on the traditional clubhouse for the members of the club, promoting and rewarding the community spirit that is such an important part of running.

The clubhouse has a massive odometer flip clock that accumulates the kilometers of all the runners (through Nike +), not only for Rosebank, but JHB, Cape Town and the whole of South Africa. This ties in with the brand new global campaign “Game on, world” that puts cities all across the world against each other.

Using elements from old school clubhouses we created a space that welcomes runners by giving them a personalised locker that they own through their involvement as well as a community notice board and custom designed water cooler and digital walls, as well as a treadmill that tracks your running style so that you can get the proper trainers for your run.”

Decor label Skinny laMinx, by designer and illustrator Heather Moore, has just launched a new collection of floral-inspired fabrics called Flower Dreams.

Flower Dreams is Skinny laMinx’s first foray into multiple coloured prints and all fabrics in the collection are screen-printed in Cape Town on a sturdy multi-use cotton/linen blend basecloth that has been woven in South Africa. The collection is made up of three new designs – Flower Fields, Wild Flowers, Pincushion and the re-issue of the popular Orla print. Here’s some info on each:

Flower Fields

This design came about after Moore made a paper cutout of a flower, inspired by a Dutch vintage fabric, turning this into a repeat design with a pop-tastic 60′s flavour. Flower Fields is the first two-colour print to be produced by Skinny laMinx, and is available in three colourways: Rosy, Penny Black and Goldenrod.

Wild Flowers

Moore decided to create custom wallpaper for the bathroom of her new studio using hand-cut sticky vinyl. After living with it for a while, it occurred to her that this might be the starting point for a large-scale repeat she had wanted to do for some time. Wild Flowers is a design that is a little bit mad, very playful, and certainly a strong design around which to build a look. Although it is a two-colour print, it reads as three colours, as the base cloth is used as one of the ‘colours’. Wild Flowers is available in four colourways: Strawberry Plum, Lemon Plum, Strawberry Humbug and Lemon Humbug.

Pincushion

This design is based on Moore’s paper cutout of a Pincushion protea. The sweet ditzy print makes a great South African-flavoured print coordinate for this collection. Pincushion is available in Humbug and Wedgewood.

Orla

This was one of the very first textile designs from the Skinny laMinx studio, and is effectively a bit of a fancy stripe. Including a reversed version of this print in a range of colourways, including the soft Strawberry pink and Lemon, helps to frame the collection and tie the pieces together. Solid Orla is available in Lemon, Strawberry, Plum, Fog and Olive.

If you haven’t been yet then head over to the Cape Quarter in Greenpoint, Cape Town for Design Now! before the end of the week. Up since the 27th of October and closing this Friday, Design Now! is an exhibition of pop-up galleries and furniture and decor installations all curated by interior stylist Tracy Lynch using pieces and product offering from the surrounding lifestyle stores.

Other events at Design Now! include; a study of kitchens then and now that will be showcased by Reto Kitchens,  art from Africa Nova hosting Frank van Reenen and resident artists of The Lisa King Gallery, the launch of Neil Stemmet’s book Sout n Peper, workshops from Karen Suskin, chocolate tasting, live music and cocktails.
