Lische Joubert’s photography has taken a different direction this year so far. Moving away from featuring artists and musicians in her photos, her newer work captures moments between friends, sunny weekends and travels across South Africa from Kalk Bay to the Transkei.

She says, “I like quiet spaces. I also like shooting people close to me. Someone who I have a connection with rather just an artist doing their thing. So in a way it’s become a lot more personal. Which I prefer.”

Lische says photography started as a hobby but has become an outlet for her and a way of channeling thoughts and experience into expression. She regularly updates her Tumblr, Wild Eyed Wolf, with her images and inspirations.

Lische promises a few new photo series in the near future. For now, enjoy this selection of her latest.

POV Female is an international photography project started by London-based graphic designer and art director, Damien Poulain. First taking place in 2011, each year the POV (point of view) Female project promotes and publishes the work of five female photographers from one major city in the world. For 2013 the focus is on Johannesburg.

Each selected photographer has her previously unpublished, self-initiated projects published in a 36-page monograph printed on recycled paper, producing a five-book set for each city. These are published through Poulain’s independent publishing house Oodee. The books are limited to 100 copies each.

In 2014 the project goes to Buenos Aires and in 2015 to New York.

Joburg ad industry freelancers Jeff Tyser and Kerryn-Lee Maggs left all the clients and deadlines behind last year and went on an epic 5 month adventure around Southern Africa. Along with their trusty Landrover, Andy (the landy), Jeff and Kerryn travelled 22 500 kms making their way through Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique.

Being creatives they documented every kilometre of the way on their blog, Lost & Found, with stories, photographs to make you weep at your desk and a beautiful series of infographic-style poster summations of their stay in each country.

Africa Geographic have since been featuring their story and imagery as a weekly blog series, here.

Samora Chapman is a freelance writer, photographer and artist hailing from, in his own words, the sticky streets of Durban Poison City. He studied a BA in English and Politics at UKZN but it was on his many travels over the last decade that he really started writing and taking photos. He says, “My writing was all poetry and stream of consciousness at first, then journalism and now I’m keen to get into fiction. It gives you so much perspective when you get transplanted into different societies and cultures around the world. It is a humbling and enriching experience.”

Samora cut his teeth writing and taking photos for mahala.co.za and their print mag, and counts editor Andy Davis as a mentor in many respects. Since then he has extended his voice to other platforms, being published in City Press, ZigZag and a few other local magazines.

On his creative journey, Samora has also been a graffiti writer. He says, “Doing graffiti takes you to places you might never have gone as a privileged, white, middle class kid. I am still passionate about public art, street art and murals and I feel it has a lot of power in providing social commentary and liberating art from the confines of the gallery.”

On and off for the last four years Samora has been documenting sub-culture and street life in Durban with a focus on producing striking and beautifully-lit street portraits. It was overseas where he first got into documentary-style street photography. He says, “It’s just so honest, and with time and patience the chaotic elements of the real world sometimes come together and form the most beautiful scenes. If you capture one of those scenes it’s almost like bringing order to the chaos. Taking reality and turning it into a moment that, like a painting, can last forever. I particularly got into taking portraits, because I like to tell stories and I’m just drawn to photographing people more than anything else.”

Besides a few months working for great documentary photographer, Paul Weinberg, Samora is entirely self-taught. Starting out with just a DSLR and 50mm lens taught him to shoot with a fixed lens and ambient light making his transition into strobism and other disciplines a lot easier.

Yesterday evening Keith Henning and Jessica Harwood launched their Autumn Winter collections for their brands Adriaan Kuiters and Take Care at their shared store in Kloof Street, Cape Town.

Keith’s menswear label Adriaan Kuiters, named after his grandfather, is known for its beautifully tailored and crafted, highly covetable pieces. The newest collection sees a shock of bright yellow added to the usually muted palette.

The majority of local photographic artist Ilse Moore’s portfolio is underwater photography, which she specialises in. Currently based in the Vaal Triangle, her art and fashion photography has been published in British Vogue and featured on international sites like Fashion Gone Rogue. Ilse attained her Visual Arts degree in 2009 through the University of South Africa and her work covers commercial, bridal, fashion and conceptual photography, most of it set below the surface.

It was the contrary concept of flight which first made Ilse consider shooting under water. Water is also symbolic of many of the concepts she was working on at the time, being life, transformation and change.

The very challenging circumstances Ilse chooses to work under require extreme focus but there is excitement to be found in the unpredictability of the process. She says, “Regardless of who or what I’m shooting, there remains very little control under water. I can always expect something magical to happen, not only due to the weightlessness and freedom, but it feels like being in another world where I have my own creative playground.

I can manipulate any particular set to achieve what I initially envisioned, but the unplanned visuals that happen under the surface often determine the direction I take the shoot as it constantly changes and forms new meanings. I wouldn’t like to remove this aspect of my shooting, the surprise of the change appeals too much to me.”

Ilse works with a small team on shoots to help her achieve her vision. Elsa Bleda is a regular collaborator and art director for Ilse’s underwater fashion shoots and is also the model in almost all of the images featured here. Ilse’s husband Sean assists and helps to build the lighting rigs she uses when she’s not relying on natural light.

This year’s AfrikaBurn festival took place in early May and those who attended are probably still trying to get back into their daily routines after the madness. Karma Spies, whose day job is working as a senior digital art director at World Wide Creative, has dedicated the last half-year to her photography after recently discovering her passion for the medium.

Karma and her Nikon were in Tankwa Town for the first time ever to cover The Burn. She sent us some of her images that really capture the essence of the festival. She said, “I’ve been to many a festival in my life, but I honestly can’t recall any such place/event that, upon arriving home, I almost immediately began longing to be back there in that time and place re-living those experiences.”

Andrew Gregory is a 3rd year Cinematography and Scriptwriting student at AFDA who calls filmmaking his biggest passion. However it’s photography that he labels an obsession, intertwined with a compulsive need to be creating. All in all his love lies in images whether moving or still. He says, “I want the eye to see something and then try to understand what that eye is seeing.”

Andrew let us know about his process, “My work is all the product of depression and anxiety. If I see something that my mind takes interest in, I will shoot it. I picked up my first camera in 2007 and since then I must emphasize a very slow progression started with my passion and interest in capturing a still image. Every day I grow as a photographer and my interests change from minute to minute. AFDA has been a huge influence on me as a creative, because of the people that I have had the privilege of interacting with.”

Andrew shoots with a range of cameras – a Nikon EM, Pentax K100D, Pentax SV and Canon 600D – and is fluid in genre and his choice between B&W or colour, digital or film. He says, “It’s all up to my mind in the moment…the unexpectedness of it all.” He has an undying love for 35mm film and the image it produces.

Rooiwolf, otherwise known as Juan Voges, is a photographer based in Woodstock, Cape Town. Initially studying electrical engineering at CPUT, it was in 2003 that he bought his first camera to revisit an old school hobby.

Having always been fascinated with the camera and light, Rooiwolf began shooting portraits of friends and landscapes while travelling. During this process he discovered his love for portraiture. He says, “People’s faces and their expressions can be quite interesting and very humorous.” Through his photographs Rooiwolf is interested in presenting beauty, nature, humour and the deeper aspects of being human. He is inspired by these things as well as the dream state.

The majority of Rooiwolf’s work is produced on film and he chooses certain film types for particular effects and moods. He also challenges himself by writing stories to photograph.

Currently he’s working on a series of hand printed black and white portraits for a solo exhibition, and working on abstract images involving patterns, textures and shapes in between.

Rooiwolf has worked with and assisted photographers such as Adriaan Oosthuizen, Natasja Fourie and Catherine Sassoon to name a few, and has done collaborations with Barend de Wet, Love and Hate studio, Gimberg Nerf, Jan Albino and We.are.visual.

About the photograph of the billboard, he says, “The billboard was created by a group called We.are.visual from Hamburg that created a bit of havoc in Cape Town and I was allowed to follow them and document their work.”
