Custom Vinyls by The Given Collective

Abe Viljoen of The Given Collective sent us these pics of custom vinyl toys that he’s been designing. Pretty cool. Have a look at The Given Collective blog over here.
Opposites Attract

A cool little initiative on the streets of Cape Town. Found this on their facebook page:
Opposites Attract is a simple project to put a smile on someone’s face and give passers by the opportunity to be creative.
Opposites Attract have been sticking magnets on anything metal around town. Street signs, post boxes, lamp posts and cars. The idea is for people to interact with them and find creative places to place them. Pedestrians are asked to move the magnets around, take photos with them or even take them home for the fridge if they’d like.
See the facebook page and website for more.
Kittens with Mittens by Poncho

Poncho is the label that Mariet Vosloo works under when she makes her charming embroidery pieces. Her work can be seen on the Poncho blog Kittens with Mittens, here. Mariet graduated from the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography in 2004 but it was at home that she got her embroidery training, “I got my love for embroidery and all things handmade from my mother and grandmother who had me knitting before I could read. Hand embroidery is my first love and I mostly make one of a kind embroidered brooches where I try to create something that is unique and special in each piece of work. I’m also a fan of reclaimed fabric and have snipped away at many an old thing in our home, so much so that my boyfriend sometimes wants to hide my scissors!”
Some of Mariet’s work can be found at MeMeMe in Long Street Cape Town under the Poncho label or you can view her work on Kittens with Mittens and email her for an order. She is also happy to do custom orders. Contact Mariet at marietvosloo@gmail.com Read more…

News from Springleap

For their latest competition, Springleap asked its community for T-shirt designs inspired by Evolution. “We got way more than we ever expected! We counted the votes, and have crowned sebasebi as Springleap’s latest winner. This super-talented designer is from Argentina and is 926,504,884 seconds young. His designs have been a hit with the Springleap community, and we have a feeling he’s just getting warmed up!” This is what the sebasebi had to say about his design ‘Evolution?’ above, “Nothing has changed in thousands of years; man gets the power through violence. Hope you like it”
Springleap is also running a winter special on Tiger Hug hoodies by SA illustrator Colwyn Thomas

Word on the street: Banksy in Africa

The guys at We-Are-Awesome got the scoop on legendary and anonymous street artist Banksy’s visit to Africa. I thought I’d repost the news just in case you missed it on their site yesterday. Apparently the artworks were done earlier this year in Mali stretching from Bamako to Timbuktu. Rumours are circulating that he has also been in Cairo. There was some speculation that it was an admirer of his style that created the pieces rather than Banksy himself. But the work being uploaded onto his site has been taken as confirmation that it is really him. See here. The Peaches Geldof one is a personal favourite but news is that it has been partially painted over and tagged by more than a few local artists trying to claim it as theirs.
Thanks WAA for the lead!

Car Flyer – Will you marry me?

One of our readers found this on her car the other day. She says, ‘It looked like someone had left a message for me, asking me to marry them!’. When she turned the note over it was an ad for wedding photographers, For Life Photography.

Pie Palooza’s Button Boutique

Pie Palooza’s is button MANIA. Any accessories you can think of from earrings to brooches to rings to hairclips have been adorned with buttons by Jessica Faye Bourke, founder of Pie Palooza’s Button Boutique. Jess’s day job is at Singh & Sons Advertising where she is an art director. The button boutique is what keeps her busy the rest of the time, here’s how it all happened:
Since college I “played” with buttons – making bracelets from them. I would collect interesting and pretty ones, even some from as far as “Down Under”. Eventually people started giving me the buttons they no
longer wanted and suddenly I had more buttons than I had arms for bracelets! There was no other choice other than to start up the “button factory” as my house mate has come to call it. The name? Pie and believe it or not, Palooza, are a couple of nicknames I have picked up over the years and when added together you have Pie Palooza’s Button Boutique!
I now make earrings, rings, broaches and clips with plenty more in the pipe line! I will be hosting the first Pie and Tea sale on Saturday 31st July where all the Pie Palooza accessories will be on sale – check the Facebook page for details.
