Elmarie’s latest body of work represents a shift from previously explored figurative physical surroundings to the depiction of emotional consciousness. Exhibition – Work from the Juvenile inmates of Pollsmoor prison

Young in Prison invites you to the opening of INSIDER ART: 2, an exhibition showcasing artwork by the juvenile inmates of Pollsmoor Prison. We will also be launching the 3rd issue of “Inside Out” at the opening event. Inside Out is a quarterly magazine that we produce from the work that our participants create. It is an integral part of the project that these young people have a chance to express themselves creatively and publicly. During the workshops, they explore various issues through drawing, craft, writing, poetry, drama and music. The exhibition is the culmination of 4 months work at the prison.

Papergirl SA # 1

Papergirl is an art project which, in the style of American paperboys, distributes rolled art pieces by bicycle to random passers-by in the streets.
The event itself consists of an exhibition, distribution of the art (by bicycle) and a party.
The Papergirl Project has been taking place annually during summer since 2006. Now Papergirl is coming to Cape Town, in 2010.
“The basic idea with the project is to bring art to the public in a different way than normal; to surprise people and bring them into contact with art in their everyday life. The idea of distributing art by bike came from the search for new ways to bring art straight to society, and have fun doing so!”
They’re currently offering anyone the chance to submit work.

…the former white population has given way to a uniquely African cosmopolitan population. As such, the inner city is home to a huge mix of people and cultures squeezed so tightly together that the place is barely able to contain it all…
Exhibition runs from 18 August till 4 September 2009
Venue: The Association for Visual Arts
