Word on the street: Banksy in Africa

banksy-street-art-africa-hunters

The guys at We-Are-Awesome got the scoop on legendary and anonymous street artist Banksy’s visit to Africa. I thought I’d repost the news just in case you missed it on their site yesterday. Apparently the artworks were done earlier this year in Mali stretching from Bamako to Timbuktu. Rumours are circulating that he has also been in Cairo. There was some speculation that it was an admirer of his style that created the pieces rather than Banksy himself. But the work being uploaded onto his site has been taken as confirmation that it is really him. See here. The Peaches Geldof one is a personal favourite but news is that it has been partially painted over and tagged by more than a few local artists trying to claim it as theirs.

Thanks WAA for the lead!

Fuhrer T-shirt line.

Fuhrer Tees 1

Fuhrer’s graphic tees are designed by Sean Metelerkamp, Jason De Villiers and Shaun Gardner. You’ll soon be able to find them at a store. Here’s a rationale from the brand:

‘Fuhrer makes Tees, they are quality, from the fabric to the printing. Fuhrer Tee design concepts are quite abrasive yet thought provoking, the style is reminiscent of graphic novels.  Fuhrer is in no way is an advocate for nationalist socialism, as the name is used ironically to make one question the power of authority.’

More designs after the jump.

Natasja Maria Fourie Interview for we-are-awesome

Natasja Maria Fourie

Andrew Berry interviewed South African photographer and film maker Natasja Maria Fourie for his blog we-are-awesome (www.we-are-awesome.com). Between 10 and 5 took the liberty of re-blogging the interview, because we really couldn’t have said it any better, and because, well, Fourie is quite the creative force to be reckoned with. Read the whole interview and view some of her photos, as well as links to more work by following the link below.

Enjoy!

We-Are-Awesome launches spaces

We Are Awesome spaces featuring Angie and Shane Durrant

The boys over at We-Are-Awesome have launched their latest project titled Spaces – it’s a collection of spaces people inhabit.

In the first issue they feature Angie and Shane Durrant:

Shane and Angie kindly showed us around their apartment in Jozi and now we in turn are showing you. Avid collectors of all things nice, Shane and Angie have managed to hoard a great variety of porcelain animals, dvds, books and artwork. That combined with the ultimate collection of band memorabilia and clothing items from all corners of the fashion earth, makes for a good living space.

Cape Town hipster scene gets a good look at itself

8-Bit City Cape Town scene

A relatively old blog came across our radar last week – 8-bit City takes a very good and hard look at the Cape Town hipster scene and does a pretty good job of giving it a thrashing. Since the site doesn’t have any comments on it, we’d love to hear your comments in our comments. Read more…
