Wit University campaign by Saatchi & Saatchi

Saatchi & Saatchi produced these two digital campaigns for Wits University. Check out more details after the link.

Screensavers:

The Thinking: Most school leavers intend studying after high school. However, they often don’t. Firstly, because they’re not sure what they want to do. Secondly, because they lose ambition or fall into a mindset that they don’t need a degree to be successful. The truth is, those with degrees can open doors others can’t. The Solution We loaded screensavers onto computers in high school computer rooms. The viewers see from the first person, the carrying out of a dull, boring job that calls for little or no mental stimulation – the type of job that may one day be a reality unless they get a degree.

Wits Screensavers:

Insights, Strategy & the Idea: The Challenge Convince high school students to study for a degree at The University of the Witwatersrand (WITS).

Results and Effectiveness: The Results Unfortunately and unlike with most interactive ideas, we couldn’t measure the effect of this idea. Because there’s no way to place a link on a screensaver (the moment you move your mouse the screensaver, like all screensavers, disappear). That being said, kids loved the idea and we manage to use a digital channel that’s never been used before.

2. Wits Flash Games

The Challenge: Convince high school students to study for a degree at The University of the Witwatersrand (WITS).

The Thinking: Most school leavers intend studying after high school. However, they often don’t. Firstly, because they’re not sure what they want to do. Secondly, because they lose ambition. The truth is, those with degrees can open doors others can’t.

The Solution: We created computer games and placed them on sites where high school students can download free games. At first the games seem exciting. But players soon realise they can’t achieve much in the game, just like in a real dead-end job. After quitting the game, a banner appears with a link to the WITS website. The games were published on sites like: www.blueworld.co.za, http://mostplays.com, www.studentvillage.co.za

One Comment

  1. the campaign is clever, buts its also pretty depressing. a lot of people cannot even afford to go to university, and many have been failed by the educational system. for some, the best they can hope for is to be a security gaurd or such. especially as we face a recession.
