My Day Job: Justin Poulter

Justin Poulter

Cape Town illustrator and co-founder of One Horse Town Justin Poulter left our shores a while ago to work for UK based design studio – I Love Dust. We know a few local designers who would give an arm to work at this studio so we found out from Justin what it’s like:

Between 10and5: Please let us know your official (or unofficial) job title.

Justin Poulter: Junior Illustrator / Graphic Designer

10and5: What does it take to do what you do?

Justin: Skill and hard work

10and5: If you studied, what and where did you study?

Justin: I went to CPUT, I studied graphic design and illustration between avoiding student protests with riot police on campus.

10and5: Best day ever on the job?

Justin: The day we had our Christmas party was amazing, we all took the train up to Guildford where we met the guys from London studio. Got pretty boozey on the train then ate a massive meal at Jamie Oliver’s restaurant. The night ended with a pile on in the train on the way back.

10and5: Worst day ever on the job?

Justin: It was tough in the beginning keeping up with the pace, and trying to impress everyone, so had a couple of bad days. But generally it’s great, we have some great laughs here in the studio.

10and5: Weirdest task you’ve had to perform while at work?

Justin: Taking my boss’ dog Heskey out for a walk, I went round the block, it took 45 minutes cause he walks mad slow.

10and5: What did you want to be when you were growing up?

Justin: I kinda always knew I wanted to be drawing in whatever I do. I wanted to be an artist till I found out you can actually get a job drawing.

10and5: Advice to those who want to follow in your footsteps?

Justin: Do as much work as you can, have a go at as many styles as you can. Learn to work fast, take short cuts where you can, but always make sure your final product is impressive and original.

10and5: The main difference between working in SA vs in the UK?
Justin: UK – Less time, more budget.

10and5: Your dream job?

Justin: Creative director for a company like this, eventually.
