Francesco Nassimbeni’s The Domain

Megan Young as MARK
The Domain is a genre-defying new play by Fleur du Cap nominee Francesco Nassimbeni. Using material generated by a young cast of six, Nassimbeni is serving up a hyper-modern mash-up of original song, dance, narrative and poetry with costumes by Richard De Jager.

The plot: Six characters seeking refuge from themselves stumble upon a new territory – The Domain. Their histories erased, they start inventing new ways to be. Hidden agendas, secret fears, recurring dreams – these are the raw materials of The Domain’s architecture. An adventure that traverses time and space, The Domain asks ‘who are you?’ in a voice you have never heard before.

Nassimbeni on the work:

“One of my inspirations was Juliet Jenkin’s impressive but little-known play SPRAWL. Her use of chorus and poetic forms in the play struck me as a way of freeing up the dramatic act, giving the piece larger scope, fewer confines.

I also knew that I wanted a striking visual, and for this I turned to fashion’s own l’enfant terrible, Richard De Jager, to create an aesthetic. Using elements of his range PWHOA, Richard has conceived an original costume design encompassing his trademark knitwear, antique dance apparel and cast-offs provided by the cast.”
