David Chien has been living and working in The Netherlands since graduating from AAA in Cape Town in 2007. His background is in copywriting and marketing but he has always had a passion for contemporary and urban art and illustration.
Recently, David started a representative agency of South African illustrators to promote our local talent in Europe. The collective, called Zulus Can Draw, counts some well known names – Justin Southey, Bruce Mackay, Jade Klara, Carmen Ziervogel, Greg Darroll, Clemet de Bruin, Karen Vermeulen, Nicole Long, Chris Valentine and Elise Wessels – as part of its artist offering.
We think it’s so great that David is exporting SA talent to Europe and providing their advertising and publishing industries with fresh illustration, visualisation, storyboarding and typography.
The Zulus Can Draw philosophy is that work can only be beautiful if it is sustainable. David says, “Zulus is all about promoting talent back at home, so I naturally felt profit should contribute to building the community as well.” To do this David supports an initiative close to his heart, Greenpop, and regularly pledges trees to be planted by the local urban greening and reforestation project.
