Musa Nxumalo is a photographer born in Soweto and based in Johannesburg. He was the 4th recipient of the Edward Ruiz Mentorship at the Market Photo Workshop in 2008. The mentorship programme was established to commemorate the life of renowned photojournalist Edward Ruiz, is funded by AngloGold Ashanti and offers the winner financial and infrastructural support to create a body of work over the course of a year.
Musa used this time to develop his series ‘Alternative Kidz’ an exhibition documenting urban black youth who choose to identify with alternative culture. Part of his artist statement at the time read, “My photography intergrates documentary and fine art photography practices which are used to explore and reflect on both the society I grew up in and currently live in, as well as on my identity and personal perspective as a young black man living in South Africa.”
Since then this accomplished young photographer has had two solo shows, has been part of various group exhibitions, has been published and has won numerous other awards. He was also part of last year’s Stocktown x South Africa short film series. Take a look at the video here.
This is some of Musa’s latest work. His portfolio is currently under construction but keep an eye on it here.
