14 Jun Young South Africa: ‘Sebenza’ LV feat. Okmalumkoolkat by Chris Saunders
Chris Saunders is an avid recorder of SA youth culture through his photography and film. His latest piece, and his first music video, is for London-based trio of producers LV featuring Dirty Paraffin‘s Okmalumkoolkat (Smiso Zwane).
The video is for their track Sebenza, meaning ‘work’ in Zulu, their second collaboration since 2010’s Boomslang. The music video is set on the streets of Johannesburg and Orange Farm Township.
On his blog, Chris says, “I wanted to produce a video which was a culmination of my South African sub-culture photographic documentaries and get them to move in a scripted music video format. We featured some very contentious cultures which are hitting the scene in South Africa, The Isikhothane’s (recently featured on ETV in a very negative light), who battle for fashion, Spinning, where people meet up with hotted up cars on weekends and perform mad tricks to entertain crowds of people in public spaces and the new Primal Stof music scene lead by Dirty Paraffin.”
The track is off the the ‘Get A Grip EP’ to be released on Hyperdub, July 23rd, and the ‘Sebenza’ album which will be released end August. All the vocalists on the album are South African; Okmalumkoolkat, Ruffest, and Spoek Mathambo.
The video premiered on Dazed Digital yesterday. Find out more in an interview they did with Chris, LV and Okmalumkoolkat, here.
