It’s Women’s Month in South Africa so throughout August we’ll be sharing the work of and interviews with our favourite female creatives. Some of them are mentioned regularly here on 10and5 and some will be first time features.
Kicking us off is Cape Town based illustrator Jade Klara with some of her more recent work. Always true to her style, Jade is inspired by Africa, kawaii, ecology and story tales. Her work is often a place for story book girls and wild animals to hang out together, and snakes are always welcome. Even her most feminine work features her signature edge.
Currently Jade is working on a show at Salon91 Gallery for early next year with Candice Jezek, painting a surfboard for the Wavescape exhibition with Cassandra Leigh and participating in Wolves’ upcoming Yay Bee Sea exhibition.
On the creative woman she is inspired by, Jade says, “There are many female creatives who I admire. I recently read Zoo City by Lauren Beukes and I fell in love with it. The book is dark, magical and wonderful and she’s pretty cool too.”
