08 Oct Designer on the Road
If you think either sacrificing life savings or standards is the only way to see the world, Turkish designer and illustrator Cagri Cankaya will quickly prove you wrong.
Over a year ago he left Istanbul on an epic design adventure that has taken him to India, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, Ukraine, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates. So far.
Having worked for some of the biggest advertising agencies as an art director back home, Cagri is using his design skills to travel, with no savings or credit cards to fall back on. To survive he is working at design companies, advertising agencies or game development studios everywhere he goes.
At the moment Cagri is in Cape Town working for the appropriately named, design studio Now Boarding. After South Africa he will be off to Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, and then he takes Europe.
So far he has worked at top agencies Young& Rubicam, Continuum, Lowe, McCann Erickson, JWT, Leo Burnett and Euro RSCG. All his adventures are shared on his blog and Facebook page. Take a look:
Cagri says, “I want to let more people to know about this. Especially other designers who are stuck in the corner of an agency, being unhappy with their lives, doing the same kind of revisions for the same clients.”
