01 Feb Patrick Latimer | A-holes, D-bags and Big 5 Superheroes
Cape Town based illustrator and cartoonist, Patrick Latimer, has played with the idea of heroes and villains in two of his most recent illustrated series. A-holes and D-bags is an ongoing collection that categorizes the most notorious of TV and Film, as either an unadulterated A-hole or a D-bag with the possibility of shaking his bad attitude. Patrick explains:
What’s the difference? This has been a topic of earnest discussion over many dishes of spaghetti bolognaise and pitchers of strong coffee among family and friends. While pondering some real pieces of work, we realised that classification was key and wrestled with this eternal question: What makes someone an a-hole or relegates them to d-baggery?
After much enthusiastic debate we decided it has to be a continuum. A-holiness is however so far along the scale that it’s pretty much intrinsic. You just are one. The d-bag has a shot at redemption – you can be douchy without being evil incarnate. With rock-solid classification sorted, I started compiling a list of skanky big screen bastards. The list is growing.
The characters in his second series here are just as hardcore, although for the right reasons. For Big 5 Superheroes, Patrick has given Africa’s most famous beasts suitable super powers and makes us wish we could watch them in action.
