01 Feb Portraits by Chris Valentine
Chris Valentine is a 22 year old artist from Johannesburg, who has been freelancing as a graphic designer and illustrator since 2010. He was recently commissioned to create paintings using rollers made from tyre tread for this Bridgestone campaign.
These are a selection of his newest portraits created both digitally and traditionally, two of them of his great grandparents. Chris says, “I was looking through some old family photographs not too long ago, and came across these two black and white photos of my great grandparents. This led to some research into who they were and the lives that they led, and I decided to try and depict their portraits in colour. The turn of the century has always fascinated me, and this was a perfect opportunity to attempt a contemporary twist on historical images.”
The pencil portraits of successful people and famous entrepreneurs were created for the Liquid Capital group in South Africa who printed them onto large standing banners as part of a campaign they’re running.
Chris says his two favourite things in life have always been art and music, and that he always has music playing when working. His portrait of Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder was done the old-fashioned way, in oil paint.
