Toby Newsome is a Cape Town based artist whose work you’ve probably seen in a magazine or two.
Toby studied graphic design at CPUT majoring in illustration and design but now specializes in illustration and animation for clients both in SA and abroad, including Marie Claire, Men’s Health, Oprah Magazine, Real Simple and Shape.
A big fan of 50s/60s design and illustration, Toby names Ronald Searle, Saul Bass and Charley Harper as inspirations.
He let us know what he loves about what he does: I love the early stages of a project – interpreting the story, that first transition from text to image. I like experimenting with different mediums – paper cutouts, printmaking, the theatricality of light. With cutouts, setting up and photographing the illustration becomes almost as important as making it. And I love drawing.
Here we’ved featured some of Toby’s drawings, cut-outs and his recent branding project for Fairview. There is a lot more to browse on his site, www.tobynewsome.com, take a look.
