Simone le Roux is an illustrator and graphic designer whose passion for character design has lead her to create her latest project, Friends with Benefits. Simone recently graduated from the North West University with a BA(Hons) Graphic Design and Multimedia, and started working on the project in her fourth and final year.
Friends with Benefits is a series of conceptual soft sculptures based on a range of fascinating psychological disorders. Simone has designed and created prototype creatures that would make perfect companions for sufferers of these conditions. Each creature is designed with specific traits or functions to benefit the sufferer in some way. Either by fictionally taking on the behaviour of the disease to relieve the owner or by making their lives more comfortable, essentially making the creature a very handy friend.
As a lot of people have shown interest in the sculptures, Simone has re-imagined them as a new kind of designer toy under the label Ondier. They will be on show at the Design Indaba at the end of the month where Simone has been chosen as an Emerging Creative.

Here are the Friends with Benefits:
Clinomania: The excessive desire to stay in bed.
I created this functional soft sculpture as the perfect conceptual companion for people with this strange disorder. The user would be able to escape the world by falling asleep inside this creature.
Kleptomania: The inability to refrain from the urge to steal.
This creature is the perfect companion for someone with an obsessive compulsion to steal. Long fingers, a coat lined with pockets and a small frame makes this creature the best accomplice.
Trichotillomania: The compulsive urge to pull out one’s own hair.
Wear this creature as a hat. It conveniently munches on your hair, saving you time and keeping your head warm.
Munchausen by Proxy: The urge to harm or to feign illness in one’s offspring to gain attention.
Charles Bonnet Syndrome: Halluncinations of small fugures, animals or people that appear as visions.
This creature lurks about looking for small imagined creatures to feed off of. Pesky hallucinations be gone!
Doromania: The obsessions with giving gifts.
This creature is the perfect companion for someone with an obsessive need for giving gifts. Having both a female and male reproductive organs, producing offspring for the purpose of gifting is a breeze.
Cotard’s Syndrome: Delusional belief that one is dead.
