18 Feb Update: Lavanya Naidoo
Durban born but Cape Town based designer Lavanya Naidoo has a portfolio that spans corporate IDs, print ads, graphic design, illustration, cardboard furniture design and packaging, but the one craft that seemingly takes up most of her time is quilling.
Lavanya was first introduced to the art form when her mom bought her a quilling kit as a youngster but she found she didn’t have the attention span at the time to pursue it as a hobby. A few years ago she revisited the papercraft for the Design Indaba Superstars competition.
Nowadays she finds it therapeutic and enjoys being able to give depth to a flat illustration. While some of her smaller pieces take four or five hours to complete, more intricate designs like Can I stay? above take well over 30 hours.
Lavanya has become sought after for her quilling and was recently commissioned by UK agency BrandOpus to create designs for new packaging for Twinings tea.
Lately she has been playing around with quilling that isn’t fixed to a background like the skull design below. We asked if there are any exciting projects coming up for her. She replied, “Many ideas and possible collaborations in the pipeline but trying to pump out as many personal projects as I can for the moment.”
