Michelle Oberholzer is a lover of style, music, creativity and a student of the deeper meaning of life. She is also the lady behind the cinder&skylark lens who recently left her corporate fashion job to shoot and blog about SA street style full-time.
Michelle grew up in a small community near Storms River in the Eastern Cape, attending a tiny primary school of only 87 pupils. She went on to study Fashion Design at NMMU in Port Elizabeth and to work in various jobs in the fashion industry, but says that nothing clicked until she started photographing street style.
It wasn’t long after that cinder&skylark came to be. Michelle let us know how, “After a career crisis while still living in PE I decided to go to London for two years and this is where I fell in love with the way people express themselves through their clothes.
After two years in London I decided to give Cape Town a try and have not looked back. I got into the corporate fashion world again and after a few years I kept on having this nagging feeling of starting a street style blog. At that point in time street style was not so big and I was addicted to Hel-Looks, which is still my favourite international blog.
The old nagging feeling had to visit me quite a number of times before I listened. The 1st day that I went out to the streets with my camera I was hooked. I loved looking for style, meeting people and interacting on the street. It was amazing!”
cinder&skylark has grown remarkably and Michelle’s photographs have been published in New York Magazine’s The Cut and featured in the New Yorker online. Michelle has also started blogging for Styleattitude.net and Itswhatiminto.com.
She says, “The one thing that has amazed and surprised me is that my love for photographing street style has also grown. I simply love being out on the streets with my camera. It is an amazing feeling to know that people from all over the world are keeping their eye on Cape Town street style.”
Michelle hasn’t looked back after leaving the 9-5 world at the end of January and has since been part of Jameson The Thread and an exciting campaign for G-Star featuring bloggers from around the world.
As for her plans for the rest of the year, she says, “At the moment I am spending more time on photography for the first time since I started my blog and I’m enjoying learning more and seeing the improvement in my ability and eye. I think as a photographer you never stop learning. I would love to work with brands, designers, shops and magazines in doing shoots for ranges as well as shooting street style.”
