Marc Barnard is an artist whose versatility allows him to create art and design through multiple styles and mediums. His varied creative background has seen him study fine arts, fashion design and illustration at Lisof and London’s Central Saint Martins. Photography and graphic design became natural extensions of these disciplines for him.
No matter the medium, Marc has been making images and using them to tell stories for as long as he can remember. Currently he works as a professional artist, selling and exhibiting mostly photographic and digital works. He has also been a Creative Director at pop culture-savvy agency, Red Flag, for several years.
Being passionate about music and film, Marc is naturally drawn to create visual narratives for both industries. This love has led to creating artwork for local films (including Riaan Hendricks’ The Devil’s Lair) and design jobs for local record labels including Just Music, Gallo and Sony, and musicians including Shadowclub, Zebra & Giraffe, Tailor, Miriam Makeba, Flash Republic and Goodluck to name a few. Several of these designs being nominated for awards.
Besides being influenced a great deal by music and films, Marc’s case of wanderlust means he travels extensively to expand his awareness and be inspired by other cultures.
An excerpt from a piece written about Marc’s work reads, “A story exists between the mundane and the overlooked. In each and every day the timeless moment can be found discarded somewhere, under your nose and in plain view. This is what Marc Barnard looks for. This is what he finds…His camera shutter, in a quick click, catches the everyday with its pants down while his deft strokes of the pen quickly summarise the elegance of what he witnesses…”
