The Pit is a South African website & zine (both printed and online) featuring the local underground bodyboarding culture through photography and videography. Its good looks are due its founder, Graham Wiles, also being a graphic designer.
The website is home to photo and video galleries; a ‘misfits’ photo blog; a ‘community’ page for competitions, reviews, surf missions and press releases; and a ‘crew’ page, with a growing list of contributors. By relying on content submissions the site is a creative outlet for the bodyboarding community with whom they work closely aiming to fill the gaps, promote, produce, and play.
The zine showcases the best of the photographs and includes interviews with bodyboarders making a name for themselves. Before the digital version goes online, The Pit releases a limited edition black and white zine, which is distributed hand to hand, for free.
The digital version is in full colour and features some really great photos that haven’t already been printed in the few well-established bodyboarding magazines. The Pit looks to bridge the gap between amateur and professional. They say, “By featuring great content that deserves to be shared with the world, we will be promoting the work and development of pro’s and amateurs alike, for the love of bodyboarding.”
The Pit Apparel is another development, coming soon, which will include a number of hand printed t-shirts, caps and accessories. Having recently bought a single t-shirt screen-printing setup and sewing machine, Graham with fellow designer Lavanya Naidoo, has been sewing in labels and learning the processes behind building a clothing label.
Like the zine itself, the clothing will be concept based and include branded, typographic and illustrated designs.
