DiRTY COLLECTiVE is an online concept store representing and selling the wares of local clothing brands, artists and designers. Pen & Ink is their own project and is a limited edition artist series focussing on the raw aspects of illustration: hand-generated and paying homage to imagination.
DiRTY COLLECTiVE decided on ‘Locals Only’ as the first theme and hand-picked five of SA’s top young artists to answer the brief. They are:
– Cape Town based illustrator and street artist, Ninjabreadboy.
– Durban based illustrator and artist, Skullboy.
– Cape Town based illustrator and artist, Bruce Mackay.
– Cape Town based tattoo artist representing Sins of Style tattoo parlour, Lee Herbert.
– Jozi based illustrator and graffiti artist, R!OT.
The artists were asked to illustrate on an A3 page which was then scanned in at a high resolution and silk screened at the exact size that it was drawn. Each of the artists’ illustrations are limited to 30 T-shirts and are exclusively available through the DiRTY COLLECTiVE online store.
In this video by IfNotWhyNot Media we hear from three of the artists involved – Ninjabreadboy, Bruce Mackay and Skullboy – and get a behind the scenes look at the making of the limited edition T-shirts.
