Freelance illustrator Maria Lebedeva lives and works in Johannesburg but was born in Moscow, Russia. She arrived in South Africa at the age of 6 where, after school, she studied information design at the University of Pretoria. Maria went on to complete a masters degree specialising in illustration at the University of Stellenbosch. Besides working as a freelance artist, Maria is a part-time illustration lecturer at a private college.
Maria’s artworks are mainly created using mixed media; combining watercolour, gouache, acrylic, pencil, ink, and collage to achieve the desired effect. She enjoys working with visual storytelling whether for illustrated books, editorials, or illustration within a gallery context. Whether working with a sequence of illustrations or a single image, her main motivation is to create illustrations that are open to interpretation, allowing the audience to make their own associations, and encouraging them to participate in the storytelling opportunities each image offers. She is most interested in attempting to capture in-between moments, memories, and observations from life, mixing these with a good dose of folk-tale influence.
Maria’s work has been showcased in a number of exhibitions in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Stellenbosch. She has a new solo show planned for later this year. Maria’s illustrations are available for sale at Wessel Snyman Creative at the Old Biscuit Mill in Cape Town, and online at thefineprint.co.za.
