L’MAD is a fashion and collaborative art studio that curates unique and limited edition collections with established and emerging African visual artists. Director Lucy MacGarry chooses projects that present multidisciplinary creativity, and has worked directly with a number of artists including Michael Taylor, Jan-Henri Booyens, Jill Trappler, Richard Penn, Michael MacGarry and Titus Matiyane. The L’MAD collections are stocked in South Africa and Europe.
Their latest offering is a new collection of silk scarves for men and women designed in collaboration with photographer and filmmaker Nico Krijno. This new range features a selection of Nico’s photographs exploring a wild but intimate surreality through the use of the human body and familiar objects.
Nico first started exploring photography while growing up in semi-desert small town South Africa before heading to Cape Town to pursue a career in the medium. Through commercial, fashion and architecture commissions he has been able to support an independent fine-art practice. Nico’s images have been described as “at once hyperreal and otherworldly, pointing at the banality of existence through the semiotics of everyday objects, with humour, sexual innuendo and surreality present in equal measure.” He was nominated for the Paul Huf Award 2013 and his second solo exhibition, Fulcrum Study, is currently on show at Blank Projects.
